Star Trek Discovery

The greatest sin in the star trek universe, is being forced to ride in an ugly ship. Khan Noonien Singh had that indignity with the Miranda class.

There are literally HUNDREDS of concept ships that look better than that monstrosity, for the sake of all that is good just and holy in this world, spare us that hideous hulk.

If they wanted a science/discovery type cruiser, they should have gone with a modified reconnaissance class

Or something like this with the pod stripped off the top would look a thousand times better:

Does NO one working at CBS care about beauty in the world anymore ?!?!??!??!??!??

I'm soooooo looking forward to the looks on my students' and colleagues' faces when I start talking about enjoying the new #STD next January when Star Trek: Discovery comes out.

My gut feeling - very early 23rd century (2210-2220-ish), meant for military duty in war, may or may not have seen action, was put in reserve in the event of a(nother?) Fed/Klingon war. Got occasional upgrades (deflector dish, phaser turrets) as they became available so it could keep up with newer ships.

I'm seeing little bits of the Oberth-class design in there too (recess in upper saucer, sides of nacelles), which fits with the numbering pattern.

Anyone else notice the font of the registry is pure Franz Joseph?

Man, when the ship comes out of the asteroid, if you watch the top of the asteroid and the stars, ignoring the ship, space looks epic! It looks like real, deep, dark, dangerous space.

Wow, there's a lot of complaining in this thread.
Don't go over to Trekmovie. I think some of them over there are working in a suicide pact!

I think people are focusing on what is ultimately very little. This isn't the final product and, hey, after JJTrek arguably divided the fanbase we finally have a new prime universe Trek that could well bring fans back together. Personally I think that's something to celebrate instead of nitpicking supposedly dodgy CGI. So I must admit to being a little disappointed at the amount of moaning this is generating.

Amen!

While I am not a fan of the Discovery's design, I can't imagine any ship that would have pleased everyone. This stage was always going to happen. :)

I am not keen on the design, and if they should have used a Daedalus-class type of ship if they were to call this new ship "Discovery".

This was pretty clearly a test render so I'm sure the final model will look excellent. As @Dennis said earlier, CBS can't really afford to let this show look cheap.

They assembled a dream-team of producer/writer/directors. However, there has been little info other than that leak about the guy who made supposedly "gothic" concepts for the Klingons about the production design. So it wouldn't surprise me to see the production design face-plant like this, just as it did also (unfortunately) with nuTrek.

Establishing a Trek aesthetic post-Berman-era seems to be a problem. Star Trek Online hasn't been perfect but is probably the best example of extending earlier designs to make them look contemporary.

IDK - I have never warmed to that "Star Trek Phase II" ship design from the abort TV series attempt that became "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" (which IMO looks like what they're going with here.)

Ralph McQuarrie created that design for Star Trek: Planet of the Titans. Not Phase II, not TMP. PotT was a completely different project, related only in the sense that it was one of the early attempts to bring back Star Trek after the original series had been cancelled. The Phase II Enterprise was designed by Matt Jeffries, and was used by Andy Probert as the basis for what we ended up seeing in TMP. The McQuarrie Enterprise was a very different ship design from a very different project.

My opinion on the Discovery model is basically the same as my opinion on the Voyager model: beautiful model, terrible design. The shapes and proportions just don't go well together. In my opinion the design looked a lot better in Star Wars, when McQuarrie no longer needed to have a saucer and nacelles attached and could just let it be the Star Destroyer. But, even though I REALLY dislike the ship design, I’m still very much looking forward to the show. (And in the meantime I'll be keeping my fingers crossed that they change the design completely before the show airs.)

But if it doesn't? I learned to live with the Galaxy and Intrepid classes, which I also thought were ugly. (Although not nearly so much as the absolutely hideous McQuarrie design.) Either way, ugly ship designs didn't stop me from enjoying TNG or VGR, and I doubt it'll keep me from enjoying DSC.

Trek ships kind of look odd in general, to be perfectly honest. It'll probably grow on people, especially when we start seeing hi-res imagery. Bryan Fuller is first and foremost a Trek fan. I feel like putting the design out there early might be a way to get feedback from the fans, and if so, it's possible he will take it to heart. If enough people don't like it, he may consider modifying the design.

I mean, don't get me wrong. I dig it. But it is an early mock up, and possibly subject to change.

So let's all be patient. :techman:

Something to consider. There's a history of ships with long lasting names in Trek, lots of ships have numbers after their registry number. What if this is just a glimpse of the first ship with the Discovery name on it? Later we'll see the A, the B, etc till we get the real one. (Maybe.)

If they're including continuity from the "Enterprise" series - the first Starship with the name 'Discovery' was the NX -04 which actually appeared on the screen for a number of episodes. However, like the NX-01 Enterprise this was prior to the Federation proper being in existence.

I was reading a Trekmovie.com article I noticed this tidbit

http://trekmovie.com/2016/07/23/breaking-fuller-announces-new-series-titled-star-trek-discovery/

UDPATES: During the subsequent press interviews producer Heather Kadin exclusively told Trekmovie.com that the design for the U.S.S. Discovery is not final

Also Trekmovie spelled Updates wrong.

I don't think they'd go to all this effort to make this render if they were not going to use the design, so it will probably keep the same general shape.

But parts of it could change between now and January

Amen to that. I expected something cool or interesting. But not only is it a bad looking, the effects look like it was done by someone who just discovered 3D rendering software a month ago.

I mean... just look at this low-polygon horror:
