Star Trek Discovery

Yeah, everything about this says it's a test render.

If we're honest, no matter what the budget CBS can't afford to have their new series criticized as cheap or cheesy looking as compared to the nuTrek movies.

IF the registration number means anything (I'm seeing theories that there may be some time fiddlin'), then it would make more sense why they went after Axanar. Similar time period right?

It honestly could be a ship of any era as well, especially if it's a test render. It might have a lettered subdesignation, like the D at the end of 1701, and they could add it later on.

Or not. Who knows? We don't see a lot of lettered registry names in Trek at all beyond the Enterprise, so maybe it's not always displayed on the starship itself. I reserve judgment until we see or hear more.

Sure, it's not the best looking ship we've seen.

And let's be honest, that footage looks cheaper than the CGI in a sharknado movie. No way it's anything more than a quick and dirty bit for the SDCC.

An old ship in the future would make sense considering they're launching from inside an asteroid. Ships are built in the atmosphere or shipyards, an asteroid indicates they're on the run or hiding from something or someone.

I could see that happening. Post TNG era, the Federation is in ruins, this old ship was hidden in an asteroid in the past and forgotten about...someone found her or remembered her and she's pressed back into service to help rebuild what's left of the Federation. That would work for me but please, no Klingon/Federation mixed crew. I'm pretty tired of the Klingons and the Romulans and the Borg. Give us something different!

I just saw it. Very....raw. Looks like a fan-film trailer, honestly.

But it's only a teaser with no footage, so there's no way to judge until we see the actual show.

I have absolutely no doubt this is just test footage. I just can't believe in this day of the internet that they thought that looked good enough to show to the public. They could get away with showing a concept image of the Enterprise in 1999, but it's a very different world today.

But in the end, I have faith (in the heart?) that Fuller and friends will produce a fine show.

It's not just the ship design - it's the lighting, rendering etc. This is pre-viz.

I like this. I would love to see the Federation fall apart and rebuild itself. Societies diminish and rebound. Guinan put it best: "As long as there's a handful of you to keep the spirit alive, you will prevail." I know a lot of us want optimism, and I think that's plenty optimistic, even in the face of dystopia. As long as there's hope and teamwork and family, it'll stay true to the spirit of Star Trek. Just my two cents.

IDK - I have never warmed to that "Star Trek Phase II" ship design from the abort TV series attempt that became "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" (which IMO looks like what they're going with here.) I AM happy this season of the new series either is in, or is VERY near the TOS time period/era.
