HUGE Mr Sulu Spoiler

Oh look, I can post pictures too!

This is a mess. A plain and simple tokenism
Goerge Takey knows it, i know it. We all know it.
You still don't know what tokenism means or what Takei actually said or implied.

Boy, this is really going in circles now. All in all I'm just really surprised and happy, that with the exception of three or four posters here, the vast majority of the TrekBBS seems to have no problem at all with gay Sulu. And isn't that a great achievement in itself? :)

Even George Takei can see how awesome it is, even if he would have done it differently: “I do fully understand and appreciate what they are doing—as ever, boldly going where no one has gone before.”

Given that roughly 95% of the posters in this thread disagree with your position, apparently not.

You should probably stop trying to act like you speak for everyone, too.

I m sorry if you have a problem with that, but the "we" it is just a feeling that i have...my feeling..I hope you do not want to dictate what i want to say.
I hope you can be fair even if my opinion it is not yours.
It seems your humor in this matter is a bit more intolerant. I as the same tolerance.

Officially Prime Sulu is straight according to Pegg, so I don't see what a picture of MU Sulu sexually harassing Uhura has to do with anything.
To me it's noteworthy that the best argument anybody has against New Sulu being gay is a picture of the MU Sulu engaging in sexual harassment.

Nothing is being dictated. You just need to be more precise.

I'm not dictating anything. I'm giving you advice (just as a fellow poster in this case) that you should be more thoughtful in choosing your words.

Well, if it's your opinion, you need to say that, instead of continually using this "we" speak to try to allege you're speaking for all Star Trek fans, which you in fact have not been, since the majority of this thread disagrees with you.

just forget the tokenism..i ll rephrase if you want

George Takei is right, he knows it, i know it. We all know it.

Takei is right that Roddenberry probably didn't imagine Sulu to be gay?

I mean, yeah... Roddenberry created Trek in the 60s. There was no way they could've gotten an openly gay character in the series at the time, sadly.

There's no need for us to not update it a little. Whatever Roddenberry wanted the characters to be like shouldn't stand in the way of creating amazing stories with a modern and diverse cast today.

- There's just as much "creation" involved in this decision as there would be to create a new briefly seen background character who was gay.

The people saying it should be a new character would be crying "tokenism" if a character had been created solely for the purpose of showing gay people exist in Star Trek.

It is just misdirection.

Well in that case it actually would be. Now if they made Jaylah gay it wouldn't have been, though we would still get the same complaints, but I prefer what we did get.
