Writing In A New Chekov

It does not bode well for the character that he is not needed aboard the Enterprise. Bring on Rusky (à la Welshy).

As one of the big 7 from the movies, they made the decision to go out of their way to use Chekov but he has never been essential. Yelchin's contribution has been memorable and fun.

I certainly don't favour them closing the door on recasting in the future but the fact that they had to go out of their way to use him means that having an extra at navigation as we did in STID will work just fine.

I personally favour a name check character because I find that fun and I favour a woman to help rebalance the cast. I don't favour Saavik because I think Saavik is too young and is main character material. Ilia on the other hand is visually striking and did not have enough to do to make her stand out before becoming a fembot in TMP.

I think Rand should be used in a similar way. Hand over the coffee, give her a line or two of spikey dialogue and use her as much as Keenser or Hendorff.

Carol needs to be a main character or as a plot device on a view screen. I hope they bring her back. Since she knows Chapel, maybe they could work some scientific discovery into the plot and bring them in together.

A recast for sure. Chekov could be replaced by another character but they have to be open to recasts especially when Spock and the key squad starts to get tired of their characters and need to be replaced.

This would be a good time to make Chekov gay as well and Sulus lover.

I'd like to see Science Officer 0718 brought back and explored more.
I think at a glance he's interesting although I found his origin in the comic to be a bit too fantastical I.e. His origin was fine but to recruit him straight in as a member of the crew seemed a bit silly although it's doubtful he could be an officer with that background. Certainly as a Keenser level character he works although from what I've read of the movie plot, if they follow the comic and keep him as a cross between Ilia and Lexa Doig's Andromeda avatar it would likely not end well for him. Great death though so fingers crossed. :-D

My main reservation is that he's yet another male character. I'd love to see some visually striking women, maybe an Andorian, rather than amping up the men even more. If we get both then I'm all for it.

Meh, he's a featured background player with a light stuck on his head.

Adding Jaylah to the cast would fill it out nicely. No need for a new Chekov.
