Seasons 1 & 2 Unwatchable?

TNG's first two seasons have some stinkers, but they also have a rawness and edge I like that evaporated as the show progressed. I used to be quite harsh against TNG, but I've mellowed quite a bit. During my last rewatch I found I liked Seasons 1-4 best overall (with some exceptions) and found 5-7 became generally bland and stiff.

I like Seasons 1-2 in similar ways I like TMP best of the Trek films. They feel fresher and more distinct than what followed and suggested possibilities that were (sadly) not followed up.

Season 1 may not have been that great but its watchable. There were only a few episodes I liked in season 1.

Season 2 had some pretty good episodes too.

TNG's first two seasons had a completely different tone than later in the show. There was less dependence on technobabble, for instance. The music was excellent. It's also nice seeing younger versions of the characters, and you can really get a feel for how they evolve and mature over a couple years into the more hardened versions of themselves from season three on. It kind of feels like the events of "Skin of Evil" and "Q Who" put a few years on everyone. Oh, and the skant uniforms for men. Awesome.

And, really, season two gets lumped in with season one too much. Season two had some of the best episodes of the series. "Elementary, Dear Data," "Q Who," "Loud as a Whisper," "A Matter of Honor," "The Measure of a Man," "Contagion," "Time Squared," "Pen Pals," "Manhunt," "The Emissary," and "Peak Performance" I would consider all solid episodes. Frankly, I've always considered season two rather strong. (Special mention for "The Royale," which is wacky as hell and I kind of adore how it skewers terrible fiction writing.)

Season one has gems, like "11001001," "Home Soil," "Coming of Age," "Conspiracy," "Heart of Glory," "The Big Goodbye," "Too Short a Season." "The Arsenal of Freedom," "Datalore," "We'll Always Have Paris," and "Where No One Has Gone Before." I kind of think of season one as basically Star Trek: Phase II. If you accept that it's really just an updated version of TOS, overwrought, old-style scripting and all, it works on a camp level for me. Even "The Naked Now" is such a monstrous, entertaining mess as long as you kind of excuse how corny it is. The only episodes that flop for me are ones that really botch whatever message they thought they were getting across, like "Code of Honor" and "Angel One."

To be perfectly honest, I adore season one and two. But I tend to find something to love about any and all Trek, even the crap episodes. It's all nostalgic for me. I adore corny eighties schlock. :rommie:

The first season was not impossible to watch, but I always found it ridiculously hard to watch Picard. His demeanor in that season (versus the other six) was so cold... distant...

Season 1 is so red. I recall the lighting and atmosphere being so....so red.

River without a beard = No thank you. Hated it in season 1 and I especially hated it in Insurrection.

I get that. Although, I think part of his character progression throughout the series was him lightening up a bit once he got more comfortable with his crew. So it's not particularly weird he acted like that early on.

Picard was anything but emotionally remote in Season One. For example, in "The Big Goodbye" he's a little too excitable about his first trip through a holodeck. Also, He was often fascinated by things, which he was relatively indifferent about, later. For example, he'd wrap up 1st Season episodes with talk of, "... oh, there's more adventure to come, I'm sure of it, Number One" and he'd be all smug and happy with himself, for no reason. What was different about Picard, especially, in Season One was his relationship with Riker, like he felt challenged by having this young stud as his First Officer. So, Picard was given girlfriends like Vash and ended up insinuating himself onto Away Missions, to demonstrate that he was still virile and Manly ...
