HUGE Mr Sulu Spoiler

It is from the reality where Nero and Old Spock come from, which is the one we saw up until 2009...
Nero traveling back in time and destroying the Kelvin changed almost everything, so it is an alternate reality...
The ships are more advanced, different alien species are part of the Federation, Kirk lost his father, Spock his mother and his planet, Spock and Uhura are in a relationship...
Just to name a couple of major differences from the original timeline/reality...
So Sulu being gay in this reality is not that big of a deal...

Whatever you want to call it, doesn't make it another universe. Blowing up a planet does not change someones sexuality. It's like saying "bringing the whale back made Kirk homosexual"

I can't help but wonder what alien species would think of homosexuality. For instance, I would assume Vulcans would think bigotry is "illogical". Romulans, on the other hand might think the exact opposite.

I can't see that Vulcans approve of homosexuality in fertile age.

Sulu has a family and a daughter, making it at least more probable that he is straight. That's why another character would be a better fit. It has nothing to do with people not accepting a gay character.

I call "bullshit". After reading your posts, I am convinced you are just arguing to get attention because you're bored (or something) and that you don't understand your own points.

No, the thing is, you don't understand my points. Maybe they are too hard for you to understand, maybe you're simply not up to par. Why is a matter of debate, but I am serious in what I'm typing and I do understand my points.

If you time travel in Universe A (version 1) back in time, you arrive in Universe A (version 2) whilst version 1 continues without you.

Think of it as a branch in the stream or river (of time).

As soon as you time travel, you create parallel universes by the very act of arriving at a point in time you were never supposed to be.

Or you arrive back at the point in time where you were always supposed to be, creating a pre-destination paradox.

The alternate universe makes more sense because it prevents a bottle-neck e.g. Hitler was never killed because 7 billion time travellers from 7 billion time zones all turned up at the same time and crushed each other to death.

It's debatable whether a timeline is created from the moment the time traveller appears thus branching, or if that timeline has always existed, running parallel to your original timeline, but in this one you have always been part of its history.

Either way, the whole concept of the temporal police seems silly if you can never erase a timeline, only create/enter a branching timeline, isn't your job completely pointless?

Gay people can and do have children now though. It should be even less of a big deal - and less of an indicator of orientation - in Trek's future.
What character would be less problematic? McCoy who is divorced and his counterpart was divorced twice with an old girlfriend showing up on the show? Scotty and Chekov both had love interests, as did Kirk. Spock and Uhura are already in an established relationship. I can't see how any established character would've been a better fit

Sulu's daughter Demora will be seen with Sulu's husband, so that's one issue resolved.

"I killed Hitler!"
"No you didn't, I killed Hitler!"
"What do you mean you killed Hitler? I stabbed him in the chest! It was plain as day!"
"What? No you didn't, because I made him fall down an open manhole cover and he was fine before I did it."
"All of you are crazy. I went back and sent Hitler to art school. He became a mediocre art scholar in a forgotten school somewhere."

That would get confusing awfully fast.

If an alien species itself takes comfort in close personal relationships between lovers and slso understands the concept of happiness and the seeking of it, then I don't think they'd care twice about how humans do it: heterosexually, homosexually, in pairs, and in any combination of threesomes or foursomes. As John Lennon said, "Whatever gets you through the night 'salright, 'salright." The concept of "a loving physical relationship" between two persons is gender neutral (and in the case of science fiction, species neutral, too). A 23rd century person may be more put off by Sarek and Amanda being married than a gay or lesbian relationship between two humans. Only antiquated or anachronistic human morals take a "loving physical relationship" and draw attention to the sexes involved in the relationship in order to make judgments about whether it's "right" or "wrong." (I don't know if I've phrased that to convey exactly what I mean, but it's the best I can do right now.)

I guess your pick, McCoy is eliminated too, since he also has a daughter.
So which character is a better fit? Because Kirk, Spock, Scott and Chekov have all been shown to be involved with women.

His MU double sexually harassed Uhura, and Sulu was affected by Deltan phermones that are basically a date rape drug.
That's it. Sulu is left a pretty blank slate. .

There was also this to be fair:

Looks like he conjured a women without trousers and wanted to grab her breast.

It is true that they can have kids and that's why it isn't hardcoded canon, just ill fit imo, and feels they did it just because Takei is Gay.
*Spoiler*

Well at least they gave some thought of Demora.. that's good

McCoy has a daughter? May I ask where that is from?

If so I think Either Chekov or Scotty. Someone who is gay can easily have a relationship with a woman before finding out he is gay (or be in denial)

To be fair, I don't think McCoy's daughter Joanna was ever officially mentioned on screen, but it was intended and part of his history in the show's bible. There were plans to use her in TOS that just never worked out.
The reason gay people sometimes don't figure out their sexuality as early as straight people is because of prejudice and social pressure. The closet wouldn't exist without homophobia, which shouldn't exist in Trek's future. So I think writing any gay character figuring it out so late in life would be a betrayal of Trek's values. I'd be very against that.

Yeah, he has a daughter
TAS The Survivor said:
MCCOY: I'm especially honoured to meet you, Mister Winston. My daughter was going to school on Cerberus about ten years ago when the crop failure occurred. The entire population would've starved, Jim, if Winston here hadn't used his personal fortune to bring in enough food and goods to carry them through the crisis.
Wait, Chekov and Scotty can be gay and have prior relationships with a woman, but Sulu, who's never been shown to have one, can't?

Denial can be pure ignorance too, it's wrong to say it's only because of homophobia. Many gay people married and got a family because they simply weren't aware of themselves until too late.

Ok, as far as I know TAS isn't part of canon.. is his daughter mentioned in any of the real shows?

And yes, the fact that he has a daughter makes the chance of him being gay far less.
