HUGE Mr Sulu Spoiler

Simon Pegg expands more on the creative decision on Sulu and why they went against George Takei's reservations: http://simonpegg.net/#2817
Just as a nerdy aside to Sulu issue, I'm glad at least one of the writing staff (Pegg) gets and agrees with what I've said before in a conversation on the board, regarding what impact a temporal incursion could have on the timeline (a conversation that lead to the creation of the Schrödinger's head meme):

Well, the explanation comes down to something very Star Treky; theoretical, quantum physics and the less than simple fact that time is not linear. Sure, we experience time as a contiguous series of cascading events but perception and reality aren’t always the same thing. Spock’s incursion from the Prime Universe created a multidimensional reality shift. The rift in space/time created an entirely new reality in all directions, top to bottom, from the Big Bang to the end of everything. As such this reality was, is and always will be subtly different from the Prime Universe. I don’t believe for one second that Gene Roddenberry wouldn’t have loved the idea of an alternate reality (Mirror, Mirror anyone?). This means, and this is absolutely key, the Kelvin universe can evolve and change in ways that don’t necessarily have to follow the Prime Universe at any point in history, before or after the events of Star Trek ‘09 [...]

Yay, Simon Pegg! :techman:

Anyone else find Simon Pegg hotter the more nerdier he gets? As in, it's not just me who reads what he says and then realizes the room is getting awfully warm?

Thank you. I posted this same general response on the Trek Core Facebook page, they are awesome by the way, and while most people agreed, I got this one response from someone that boiled down to "gays wanting tolerance makes them intolerant."

How far up your ass does your head have to be to say that kind of thing and believe it's reasonable?

I can't help but chuckle every time I read this thread title... and imagine "Uncle George" doing his patented "Oh myyyyyyyy" routine. I might need therapy.

Sulu was not and is not necessarily gay. He can be attracted to both men, women, bald aliens, and, why not, even shaved Caitian hookers if that floats his boat. In this timeline, if he has decided to have a monogomous relationship with a man and father a child then that is what it is (a long-overdue attempt to be inclusive in mainstream Trek and an homage to the original actor).

People can debate whether Sulu prime was involved in a long term relationship with a man if they like. There is little evidence onscreen to contradict this. There is little evidence onscreen to support this either so fans new and old are free to interpret it however they like.

As my mate pointed out long ago, Rand is so obviously Sulu's fag hag, he must be gay. What more evidence do we need?

That makes me wonder if the straight-in-the-Prime-Universe Sulu was ever attracted to Rand (or if Rand was attracted to Sulu because she couldn't get Kirk?) It would be interesting to see.

Rand's relationship with the junior crew appeared to be very different to the deference she showed to the senior command crew, although as a non com she was technically subordinate to both. I would certainly have liked to see more of the Sulu / Rand double act because I think it helped to showcase them both but I would describe it as an easy friendship rather than a mutual attraction.

Of course, this person may not realize (or conveniently forgot for the sake of writing a post that they thought was 'witty') that the last two films have established that Kirk is a LADIES man.

Turning him bi would have been easy though. The first two movies had each a bedroom scene with him with random women. If there is something like this in Beyond, just change the gender of the extra and his bisexuality would be established. Or if there is another bar scene with him, just let him flirt with a guy for a change.

Or just make Sulu gay. I mean, really. At this point when you're finding reasons to make someone else gay who has shown relationships with the opposite gender, you're reaching farther than you need to reach. Just accept that Sulu is gay, and there's no need to find other unnecessary outs.

People are freaking out over Sulu —who barely had any indication of his sexuality before one way or the other— being gay, but you want infamous hetero horndog Captain Kirk to be bi instead? The internet would explode like an AI that Kirk had talked into short circuiting from a logic failure. You know what? That might make it worthwhile.

Sulu is essentially a blank slate and oddly the only character that this can be said of. As our favorite Vulcan might say, a logical choice.

Not really. Most of Sulu/Rand's direction interaction comes when she brings him his lunch in Man Trap. And they just joke around a little.

OTOH, the several scenes where Uhura blatantly (by 60s standards) flirts with Spock.
True. Not quite equal. Still flimsy!

I was coming here this morning to make sure everyone had seen this excellent post by Simon Pegg, but I see it's already here. This I found this section particularly moving:

"For those who have seen it as an opportunity to sling abuse, or be rude and presumptuous, please take a long hard look in the mirror and remember we are discussing the personal details of a fictional spaceman. In the words of Martin Blank, who are you mad at? Because it’s not me."

I didn't know that Blank quote, but I'll use it often, I think.

A cynical thought: If George Takei agreed totally with Simon Pegg's decision, there'd not be much of a story. Like the Shatner/Takei feud?

This is what I'm thinking. I love George, and think he's often just the bees knees, but he has that petty side. We've seen it in the Shatner/Takei "feud" which is so one sided as to be laughable. It's clear that Bill doesn't give a shit, but George is still likely to bring it up in almost every interview he's done that's even tangentially related. He even brought it up in his bio "To Be Takei," which was a massive disappointment for me because I was enjoying the rest of his story. He can't let it go, though.

In that same vein, now he's carrying water for Gene that even Gene never carried. Honestly, I think George is insecure about the idea that there is a character named Sulu who is gay, and that the man who played the original Sulu, who also happens to be gay in real life, is no longer as distinct a figure, at least in his mind. That's projection and assumption, sure, but it's the only way I can really make sense of his reaction to this news.
