It won't bother me too much if it isn't but I was kinda hoping Franklin was a Federation Starship from sometime post-2161 and just echoed the NX in design.
It's as canon as the technical manuals for DS9 and TNG as far as I'm concerned. It fits everything we've seen in the movies so far and is based on set designs.
According to John Eaves' Facebook page, we should expect to "see more" of the artist's work. So maybe there's some sort of on-screen MSD.
I'm hoping this is true, because I've always thought of ships with U.S.S. as part of the name, being Federation. And then there are the new uniforms, which differ from Earth Starfleet Nasa-style blue ones shown to be the same from the NX Project breaking Warp 2 in the 2140s ("First Flight") through to 2161 ("These are the Voyages...") at least. Starfleet's Delta pointed horizontal on a separate patch on the opposite shoulder.
The other alternative is the ship came before Enterprise, but continued on in service during the 2160s - the Federation's early days, with an updated U.S.S. patch, Starfleet delta on the chest and those grey uniforms were current then.

It's easy enough to say this test flight had different uniforms commissioned. The Starfleet delta first appeared in-universe on the Friendship One probe, launched shortly after First Contact.

There was a filming picture the showed up some months ago that showed what looked a crashed Franklin at Starbase Yorktown with Starfleet people coming out of it so they probably rescue at lest some of the crew.
Two things. One, parallel development. Just because Archer was working on the Warp-5 project, that doesn't mean that other projects weren't being worked. In fact, just do have a ship capable of higher speeds, that doesn't mean you get rid of ships that travel at lower speeds. I mean, we have access to hypersonic tech, but we are still producing jets that travel at lower speeds; we're just making them more efficient at lower the cost (ideally). And, two, it may be cheaper to churn out a bunch of Franklin's, especially during war time with the Romulans. FYI.
Never had an issue with pre-Federation ships having the USS prefix. United Earth existed long before the formation of the Federation, so "United Star Ship" wouldn't be that much of an anomaly to stick on early earth ships, Starfleet or otherwise.
I wonder how far Yorktown is to Altamid (or whatever the planet's name) is at Warp 4.

Not a dig, but in the Abramsverse probably 5 minutes.
If it was a lost prototype ship, my say it's warp drive malfunctioned TMP-stlye, creating a wormhole which deposited the ship at Altamid. I guess we'll find out soon.

Pretty sure that came from me, and I wasn't wearing my glasses. It's definitely somewhere in the vicinity of 300-399 though.
They forgot the leading zero. I know someone who will be very disappointed.
