Pitfalls the new series should avoid

On a related note, how about less of the whole transporters/scanners/warp engines/helm control whatever suddenly stopped working scenario?

That's the fun part of the show.

The WORST example of that is still in Nemesis, Picard beams over, console goes poof ... that's it, the transporters are down.:brickwall: All of them, even the ones on the yacht and the shuttles, they all have a kill switch that got triggered by a bridge console releasing sparks.

When a ship is hit like that, it's bound to have things malfunctioning. Also, in Nemesis, the ship was severely damaged by Shinzon blasting it like he did; something was bound to give out sooner or later.

From the transcript:

PICARD: Prepare for a site-to-site transport.
LAFORGE: Captain, I don't think there's a transporter...
PICARD: That's an order, Commander.
...
PICARD: You have the bridge, Commander. Try and put some distance between you and the Scimitar. Now, Mister La Forge.
LAFORGE: Aye sir.
(Picard takes a phaser rifle and transports to the Scimitar)
LAFORGE: That's it! Transporters are down.

1. No catsuits (Seven style) or huge wigs (Deanna style) :barf: they were so 80's and 90's.
2. No Klingon officer/character been there, done that.
3. Minimal technobabble!!! :barf2:
4. No Vulcan officer/character (same as above)
5. No holodeck never ever again :barf:
6. No child "star" Wesley type or those awful "Borg" kids from Voyager
7. No Russian, French, Canadian etc.. character. Give us a really alien (not Vulcan or Klingon) crew member or character from some never used country.
9. No token black guy.
10. Perfect "human" It takes a little longer than few hundred years to make a better human. So let them drink, have conflicts, smoke (if story needs it) eat pizza and listen some other music than classical. You know? Let them be humans!! Not some boring, perfect and emotionless drones :borg:

One thing that isn't exactly a pitfall but it does 'bug' me a little. Why in the 24th century are humans still going through the 'ritual' of the guy asking the woman to marry him and/or waiting for the relationship to start when he asks her on a date? Shouldn't that no longer be a thing? Why can't she start it...or do the asking? And the whole 'she changes her last name." Why would that still be a thing? 'Giving the bride' away at marriage ceremonies. Wouldn't that have fallen by the way as a social norm by then? If two characters get married I'd like to see weddings changed up a little. It's not a big deal breaker with me but it is something I have wondered about whenever I see those scenes.

Honestly, I'm willing to give anything another chance.

Fuller somehow made Hannibal Lecter interesting again, and not only that, he wrote the best Dr. Lecter we've seen on-screen yet. I remember thinking that character and its stories were completely unsalvageable after reading and watching the original Hannibal and Hannibal Rising. I was so sick of it all, I was sick of the character and sick of cannibalistic supervillains and sick of Will Graham/Clarice Starling, but then Fuller's Hannibal came around... and it was a long breath of fresh air.

If he thinks there's still some potential in holodeck stories or the Mirror Universe, or hell, technobabble, then I'm on-board.

But let's admit Mads Mikkelsen had something to do with it as well. It would be cool if Mikkelson had a spot in the new series - though for some reason when I put him together with Star Trek in my mind, I end up with Dr Lazarus from Galaxy Quest.
