The fan film contest was created in response to a wide number of fan films being made. No, they never reached Axanar Epic-ness, but I think Lucasfilm could see the writing on the wall.
Curiously, The Fan Film Awards is similar to what Lucasfilm wanted to do years ago about all of the infringing websites using their assets. They created a space for fans to upload their websites -- and attached legal ownership to the product.
All of this is about protecting IP and not having some other party make money off the copyright holder's efforts. While the money Axanar made was tiny compared to Trek as a whole, it eventually pissed CBS off to the point that they had to step in and stop things. If Star Wars fan films ever do the same, you can bet Disney will unleash their Flying Monkeys of Legal Doom too. (They already have over a Marvel fan-film.)

That is a great idea. I'll send you a note (I don't think you can send PMs yet, but I believe you can respond. I'll wait in case you can't respond yet - no worries!)

And?From back in April '16
Negotiations to sell a minority stake in Paramount are “on track” to wrap up by the end of June, Viacom CEO Philippe Dauman told analysts this morning in a quarterly call to discuss early 2016 earnings. He hinted that a potential partner would bring “international and/or technical clout and expertise,” noting that the “motion picture business is evolving.” Proceeds from the sale would be used to reduce debt, pay for “strategic acquisitions,” and return to shareholders via dividends and stock buybacks.
You could also look at the time a Star Wars fan ficcer went rogue. That's an interesting story, particularly the fan community revolt that followed it. (A nice template for how fan works communities should respond when someone crosses a line.)
And CBS/P could send that FU right back by cancelling any future Trek. What has bothered me about the Axanar debacle, is that fans continued to heap cash and adulation on Peters even after it was clear it was a scam. It was more about sending an "FU" to CBS/Paramount than anything else.
Funny thing is, FU's have a way of coming back to bite you in the rear. As we are learning now.
There was a "rumor" that there was an offer on the table to purchase the Star Trek Franchise by an unknown bidder. Also Alibaba studios financed in part Star Trek Beyond for distribution rights in China. And?

(Not that they'd ever do it, because that would be kinda stupid.)
Exactly. I try not to be petty, but I would have struck back hard at Axanar. They absolutely could. I'm someone with a mean streak, so it's a good thing I'm not in a position of power at CBS. Because I'd have pulled the plug on all of it. Too much of a hassle for no reward.

The same day, I would've announced two more Abramsverse sequels! I'm a vindictive bastard!![]()

If Star Trek is for sale, it might put a lot of pressure on C/P to clean out upstarts like Axanar and every other fan studio that does quality work.
Just keeping my ears open, there has been a bit of turmoil in Viacom and CBS this year, Viacom for profit drops (34% yoy, and CBS for control over the bod) A lot of offers get tossed around these days, I just never heard it was flat out rejected yet.I would be shocked SHOCKED if Paramount sold Star Trek. It would have to be MEGA bucks. What other franchise do they have that's all theirs?
