Independence Day - Resurgence

I liked this. I always thought of ID4 as an updated War of The Worlds. This movie is like an update of the last one, so at least Devlin and Emmerich are consistent. I don't think it suffered at all without Will Smith. In fact I think everybody else fared better without him. I liked Super Future Earth and the Earth Defense fighters (the love children of MiGs and F22s). My only real complaint was that Jeff Goldblum wasn't "Goldblumy" enough.

I loved the movie. It's just a whole lot of big, dumb fun.
I really liked the post invasion world.
All of the characters were likeable.
I liked that we got a more of explanation of what the aliens wanted and what their backstory was.
The alien queen was cool.
I loved the idea of them joining up with an alliance of alien refugees from destroyed worlds. I hope we get lots of crazy looking good aliens in the next one.
Were there any references to Randy Quaid's character? I caught at least a reference or two to pretty much all of the other main characters except him.

Just watched this. The best word I could use to describe it is perfunctory. There were too many characters and most were pretty one-note, I didn't feel any weight to the plot and I definitely didn't feel any weight to any of the deaths. They just sort of happened. The way they just bounced around from scene to scene felt like one of those old video games where there's no real story stringing the playable parts together.

Saw it today and enjoyed it, although not as much as I enjoyed the original. Without getting spoilery, I'll sum it up by saying that there was a good movie hiding in there but it was hamstrung by trying to do too much in too short of a run-time. Also, where some well-placed humor can make a movie great, going for a non-stop laugh-a-minute when the fate of the world is on the line can be pretty jarring.

Did like how they kicked open the door on the possible future of the franchise- it'll be interesting to see where they go with it, if anywhere.

I give it a solid 6.5/10.

How scAry is this for 7 and 11 year olds. (Who we thought were fine watching, say, even here or captain America civil war, but the new X-Men was too scary.)

If they thought X-Men was too scary I think they might feel Resurgence is as well. There's lot of destruction, and they do show a lot more of the aliens than the first film did. I don't recall the film being particularly gory despite there being a lot of violence.

Some poster had asked about Randy Quaid. The only reference I caught was a lingering shot of his character's name on a memorial they showed at the start of the film.

As for the film itself, my take on it is that it wasn't as good as the first film. It hurt more than helped that I watched a double feature, starting with the '96 film and then Resurgence. Resurgence didn't have the heart of the first film and the humor wasn't as good as the first film. Resurgence did have better special effects, though the '96 film put its FX to better use.

Also the Resurgence characters, particularly the new or newer characters weren't well developed. Likeable enough screen presences but mostly character sketches. I don't think Liam Hemsworth owned the role as the hero fighter ace that Will Smith did. Hemsworth wasn't horrible, but he was sort of there. He did his lines, he looked like a hero enough, but there wasn't a spark there. They needed someone like Chris Pratt, who could play a charming, rascally rogue that the audience would like. Hemsworth tried but it didn't work for me. I also didn't buy his character's romance. In part this was the film's fault because it kept them too apart for the majority of the film. We didn't get to see them together enough before things went down to invest in their relationship and care about it.

I also felt there were too many characters and unfortunately this led to subplots and asides that took away from the main story and from some of the bigger characters that needed more development. That lack of development made me not really care about any of the characters, which is opposite how I felt for the original film. The original film took time to create those bonds between characters, and then the audience. Some of it might have been cheesy or simplistic, but it tugged at the heartstrings none the less.

I didn't feel that we learned enough about the aliens. And while the alternate future on Earth was interesting I wish that had been explored a bit more as well. With the sci-fi setting Resurgence wasn't as grounded and relatable as the original film was. And I didn't really get the feeling that Earth was in danger despite how much the characters said it was. In the '96 film we saw humanity pushed to the wall, on the brink. And while that was also the case in this film, it didn't quite feel that way or perhaps I was just numb to it. There was a point when I wanted the film to just end. Perhaps that was because I had watched the original first and was just getting tired of sitting in the theater, but in any event Resurgence didn't grab me.

The special humanity thing is groan inducing, but then again, its not like the original film was the most original thing either.

I was kind of hoping in this film Earth would have lost...... And the alien Pokeball only arrives at the last minute but it's too late to do anything and set that up for the next movie.

What do you guys think?
Would that have worked better?

I liked it. You can't recapture the magic of the first film and it took me quite a while to get into it but I enjoyed it in the end. One of the best decisions was giving Brent Spiner such a big role in it. Liked the War Lord character a lot too. Love that another alien race got involved and the idea of them taking the war into space is something I want to see.

Wouldn't have worked the way this movie was written, because losing meant losing not just the battle, but the planet itself. The alien scavenger ship in Resurgence was as deadly as the Death Star in SW in its own way, and the aliens were playing for all the marbles. If they had changed the premise your idea could have worked just fine, and it would have been an interesting take as well as a more traditional 'chips are down' second act to lead into a third movie.

Thanks..... I don't know I felt like that should have been a possible way for them to have gone. But overall I LOVE THIS MOVIE.

Sela Ward was good too as the new President I like her.
Loved that Bill Pullman got to reprise his role too. That was good.

Howcome the ship carrying the pokeball of hope was 3000 km wide? Was there other goodies onboard besides the pokeball? I hope they go back and see if they can scavenge stuff..

I just got the graphic novel of the first movie and it's totally different to the movie in that you see stuff from before the movie in there, under the main title says "The original movie adaptation." It is worth getting. I just wish they'd done one for this movie too. Though I do have the paperback prequel "Independence Day Crucible" and I have one of the original novels "War in the desert."

Well, there could be any number of reasons why the friendly alien ship was so large- the easiest explanation being that it was necessary for the tech and/or power generation requirements to open the wormhole that brought it to Earth in the first place.

I thought Sela Ward was good but like most of the characters, she was under-developed and we never really got to know her.

I love that Pullman came back as well, but I didn't like his character-arc. The crazy-man deal didn't sit well with me. He got a fitting send-off, though.

Didn't know about the graphic novel- I may need to look into that!

It wasn't that big. It was the bad alien mothership that was over 3000 miles.

What kind of damage to the Earth could something that large actually do just with its presence?

Oh my mistake.

That ship could do whatever it wanted to do. It generated its own gravity for one thing. Anything under it got lifted up, mind you that was one of its functions and the aliens could also turn that off creating a big mess.

I did like that line in the movie "every 4th of July" joking about an invasion every single 4th of July haha. Reminded me of Dr. Who where every christmas was an alien invasion in the UK.

Well, the Earth is roughly 9760 miles in diameter. Can't remember if the alien ship was 3000 km or mi across, but the diameter of the moon is only 2159 mi. In reality, just the arrival of the alien scavenger ship would probably have been an extinction level event. When Goldblum talked about it 'having its own gravity' I took that to mean it was due to size rather than artificial generation. The tidal effects alone would have been devastating, and its arrival (and subsequent departure) would have burned off/ sucked away a significant portion of the Earth's atmosphere. A 3000 mile wide ship touching down in the Atlantic Ocean would have sent tsunamis even farther inland than those depicted in Deep Impact. That's even before you start plasma drilling down into the Earth's core. So the whole concept was handled with Hollywood abandon (much like the first movie, to be fair) and it was fun the same way Star Wars is fun- you just have to chuckle and turn off the 'hard science' part of your brain.

Yeah I did not get that bit..... IF the Queen is vanquished they all scamper...... Where do they go? Do they all go back to another hive and sulk?

Saw this yesterday. I would say overall, it wasn't as good as the first, partly because it just doesn't have the surprise/shock value, being a sequel, but mostly because almost every story beat in this one is lifted from the first one, making it extremely predictable (even though they're generally rearranged into a difference sequence) and also giving it a palpably derivative feeling, which is made worse by the fact that pretty much none of those story beats are actually as well executed as they were in the first movie.

Having said that, though there is a difference in quality, it's not that huge, and the movie is funny, has entertaining characters and great action. So overall, I'd say it's a very solid summer blockbuster/popcorn movie that is lots of fun to watch, even though it will definitely never be a classic (even to the extent that the original ID4 is).

I know it's already been pointed out that the ship was smaller than that, but I think it's also worth mentioning that the pokeball's mission was to evacuate as many people as possible. Probably the vast majority of the space in that ship was empty.

They did actually specifically say that in the movie - that they would just disengage and go away in search of the nearest hive queen - but this is easily the biggest head scratcher for me in this plot, because it's completely self-contradictory on so many levels. First off, the pokeball said no one has ever killed a queen before, so how does it know how they would react? Secondly, the movie implies that Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum did kill a queen in the first movie, and yet the aliens in Africa continued to actively hunt humans for 10 years, while the aliens in other parts of the world apparently just went into stasis. Seemingly none of them ever tried to leave the planet. Not to mention the fact that the aliens' actual dialogue seemed to imply there was only one queen to begin with, making it seem like the pokeball had a completely different understanding of the harvester civilization than the harvesters themselves.

There's also the graphic novel Dark Fathom, which introduces the Joshua Adams character. It takes place shortly after the first film. It was a decent read, nothing earth shattering. However I do wish the film had mentioned it because there was some similarities in Dark Fathom to what happens in Resurgence.

I saw at Barnes and Noble that they do have all three original ID4 novels in one volume now and there's the Resurgence prequel "Crucible" and the Resurgence novelization. I was debating picking up some or all of them, but its doubtful I will devote the time to read them. I find the ID4 universe interesting but not well developed enough or stocked with enough characters that interest me to go beyond watching the films.

Pretty terrible, apart from Goldblum/Spiner I can't think of any positives and do I really enjoy the original movie.

Dunno if I imagined it but when Spiner woke up and was drawing, one of the symbols looked like the Enterprise too.

I give this movie a solid B. Fun popcorn flick, but it was much more enjoyable the first time around.

I agree with the critic reviews that it has way too many characters, most of whom are secondary, one-dimensional, and unnecessary. I guess Emmerich felt a movie of this epic scale needed a ton of characters to focus on, from the old cast members like Levinson and his dad, former President Whitmore, and Dr. Okun, the token LGBT character. Still, newcomers like Whitmore's daughter, the pilot boyfriend, and Will Smith's "son" inject some new blood.

Set in a futuristic-modern utopian society in which earth's governments have been unified and the fusion of alien and human technologies has led to an advanced civilization, humanity faces another alien invasion, but this time everyone is ready. Chaos ensues and the battle reignites. Looking forward to Part 3.
