BREAKING: Official Fan Film Guidelines Issued

I thought I read someplace that SAG has a $100 minimum payment allowed for "new media".

Yes, there were. They didn't need to be written down because it was pretty simple: be respectful of the IP. Fairly common sense.

I keep feeling like I have to quote myself over and over here in this thread.
There was the "make no profit" rule. That's about it. You couldn't charge money to let people view it, and you couldn't sell copies of it.
Paramount knew about Yorktown in the 80s. It was featured in Starlog Magazine. The studio said to the producer at the time that he couldn't sell taped copies of it or make a profit off of it by charging people to see it. That was it. Paramount even gave the producer some old flag props from ST:TMP that appear in the film. It was a different time back then.

Vic's initial statement, via the STC FB page:

"Hi everyone, thank you all for your tremendous outpouring of concern and support. First and foremost, we have the utmost respect for CBS and their right to protect their property as they see fit. As soon as we know for sure how the latest developments will impact STC we will most certainly share it with all of you.

STC was created purely out of love and tribute, not a desire for profit or self-promotion. Thank you again for all your support.

Vic"

Well, I have no choice but to talk to CBS now, based on the fact that one of their rules is not allowing original actors to appear in your fan film. I also have to trim YORKTOWN down to fit their 15 minute rule (our cut is 20 minutes). I have no desire to break it up into two videos.

It's your artistic vision, of course, but as a film viewer I would rather watch both parts back to back than to see you lose a fourth of your film. (All other mitigating factors you now have to deal with notwithstanding.)

Videos must not include profanity, nudity, obscenity, pornography, depictions of drugs, alcohol, tobacco, or any harmful or illegal activity, or any material that is offensive, fraudulent, defamatory, libelous, disparaging, sexually explicit, threatening, hateful, or any other inappropriate content

If the fan production uses commercially-available Star Trek uniforms, accessories, toys and props, these items must be official merchandise and not bootleg items or imitations of such commercially available products.

Legal check please:

Can I use a dildo as an alien spaceship?
Or only if it's an official non-fraudulent Star Trek dildo?

I think that falls under the nothing pornagraphic rule too. Damn them, knowing we'd resort to sex toys eventually.

Saw a video not long ago in which two kids ran out in the front yard and had a sword fight with mommy's toys.

I don't understand the "split in two" rule. It would make more sense to just say it can't be longer than 30 minutes. I think they could amend that rule.

Do they have to be split 15/15 or can you do 5/25 or something?

I find those guidelines hilarious. Yes, I know, it's the property of CBS/Paramount but those quidelines factually forbid everything that has a little more serious approach. They should have forbid all fan films instead of coming up with all those limiations.

I will skip the new movie out of protest!!! Well, I haven't planned to watch it anyway but I have a reason now.

Thanks, Alex.

The no alcohol rule is sort of pointless, by the TNG era they drink Synthehol, and in TOS as long as you don't state what the funny colored liquid is in the funky bottle, it could be anything.

Anyway, the Star Wars guidelines are specifically for submissions to their official fan film contest, as far as I know. Do they have anything similar for other works that aren't being submitted?

Kor

Not currently but there are a lot of rumors that Disney is planning to put the boot down on fan films and people using the Star Wars IP in general. There have been a lot of incidents, for example, of the 501st guys asking for money to do appearances, charging money for photographs with them, etc., and it's rattling up the chain to Disney.

Isn't George Takei as SAG actor? Don't they have rules that prevent their members from working for free? How did you pull that off?
It was 1985. He did have to sign a SAG agreement to do it, and there were certain rules about catering and hours on set in the contract. It was essentially viewed by SAG as him working on a student film at the time. All the filmmakers were students.

Farragut:

With the Star Trek fan film guidelines being posted today by Paramount & CBS Television, we have received numerous requests of how this effects Starship Farragut’s last TOS episode, “HOMECOMING” and the Farragut Forward film project. Farragut Films has always respected the intellectual property of Star Trek as owned by Paramount & CBS Television. We are assessing how these guidelines impact the productions and will advise with you when we can. Thank you to all the support, we genuinely appreciate it and glad for the run that we endured.

Intrepid:

Obviously those of us who work on Intrepid wish to take some time to digest the fanfilm guidelines that have been released today. And while it is rather early to be making any firm decisions, I am tentatively committing to moving forward on one more episode.

We will not make a final decision on this until after the folks at CBS have clarified some points but I'm hopeful we'll be able to finish the films we already have in the can and do one new film.

Whether we continue beyond that point is a matter for future discussion.

Our thanks to everyone for their support over the years.

Agreed!:techman::techman:

I've reached out to Renegades on their thoughts, but they have yet to reply.

Yesterday they were filming with WALTER KOENIG, NICHELLE NICHOLS, TIM RUSS and CIRROC LOFTON, all four reprising the Star Trek roles they played on television. The table read is meant to be today wiht a shoot beginning on Saturday for a full two part story with several Trek veterans. They have sets built in the studio and the uniforms look 100x better than the pilot, giving a TNG vibe.

I hope they somehow carry on
