Iconians, they're so hot right now

The Iconians have become a legendary race since the great episode of STNG: Contagion. They appeared in a DS9 episode in name, and have since gone on to feature in other media, including fan films and ST:O. Here's some production art for the game about how they might look.

I wouldn't mind finding out more about them in the new series. Both of the Iconian episodes are classics.

Stargate type tech. They could put Starfleet out of business--that tech. A cross over might be nice--having Iconians gateways immune to this: http://stargate.wikia.com/wiki/Attero_device
You mean Star Trek type tech?? This STNG episode came out way before the SG movie and TV show.

Stargates have limitations..for example, what will you fly around in when you get to your destination? How big and how much power does your stargate need to send things much larger than groups of people.

Did we ever hear of an actual limitation, though? You could keep an unprepared stargate open for the better part of an hour IIRC, apparently regardless of what if anything went through. If you just kept marching your legions through, the only limiting factor (before the menial need to reset) would be how fast they can run. If you placed them on gate-sized APCs, the limitation would be replaced by the speed of the APCs. And what use would a device or vehicle larger than the gate in diameter really be to you?

The Iconian gates are something of an unknown quantity even after two canon episodes. How does one operate them when not in possession of a central console? Most if not all of the destinations available from Iconia looked like they would lack such a console - was that just because the system had gone haywire after Armageddon? Or could a user call the central switchboard operator somehow, perhaps simply by waving at him/her/it?

Seems like a stationary stargate would also be vulnerable militarily. Exiting from a stargate with a mobile starship would provide defense for the gate and offensive power projection.

Honestly, I don't know all their capabilities but i don't think stargates (or maybe more realistically wormholes) would necessarily replace starships.

Stargates can only keep a tunnel open for 38 minutes and close on their own if some kind of matter or energy isn't being continuously sent through. There are hacks to this where significant energy sources on the other end can extend the time window.

I always pictured the Iconians as humanoid but I like the idea of them being more alien. It seemed to me the gateways were just unlimited distance transporters.
