I think that trailer shows why JJ Abrams has been an asset to these franchises. Certain elements in the fandoms will always hate him. His films aren't perfect. But he's breathed new life into both properties.

Sometimes I swear I feel like JJ and AP are working for Disney to turn trekkies into star wars fan. It would explain how the JJ films show so little respect for the source material, and even less for the intelligent style longterm trekkies know and love. (While doing almost the exact opposite for his star wars film). And of course AP sent in to take down the fan film community. (Which he seems so proficient at) now, with fan films and canon films covered, we just need to watch out for whoever Disney sends out to screw up the new show.

I checked their fan page's analytics in February before they locked it down. In theory, this would've been around the most active times as the suit was still fresh and AP had just stuck his foot in his mouth with that 1701 interview...
The number of people who were active at all numbered in the hundreds, and most of them didn't do much more than like a post here or there or a handful of comments.

To be fair, if we didn't have the JJ films, Star Trek might not have lived long enough to have gotten to its 50th anniversary under its own steam. Whatever one's opinion of his films may be, it's undeniable that the JJ-Treks have brought new fans to the franchise and have helped keep it alive and current.
I hate the way JJ dumbed down Star Trek. Making Scotty, Sulu, and Chekov into dumb comic relief, getting Uhura to strip down, making travel halfway across the galaxy take a matter of minutes, throwing in silly action scenes and toilet humour, giving Spock a brother -- oh wait. That was Star Trek V: The Final Frontier. You know, that REAL Star Trek that JJ just doesn't get.
I don't think a single person decrying JJ Trek liked Star Trek V. So while that's a clever takedown, it's not relevant to the legitimacy of JJ Trek criticisms.
That said, JJ Trek's success cannot be denied. And let's maybe just leave it at that, so we don't veer off course in this thread.

Not to carry us offtopic, but I could make similar points about several other Star Trek movies. The movies have always tried to appeal to a larger audience by introducing villains, adding action, blowing up Enterprises, you name it. The JJ Abrams movies are more popular. That's the main difference.

SEPTEMBER 8, 1966 = ME = longterm fan/trekkie/trekker/lover of TheOriginalSeries, TheNextGeneration, Voyager... really like a whole ton DS9 & Enterprise. Fifty years this coming September 8th. Love or like and appreciate each and every TOS and TNG movie. Own every series, every movie. Re-watch them loads & bunches as well as have them as audio cuts to take with me everywhere. The Original Series IS the place I began forming my ethical and sociological foundation.
Please. Do not speak for me. Or the many many many other longterm trekkies who, like me, do not agree with that assessment.

I'm sorry you dislike the way I worded my post. For future reference the usual way to handle disliking the way some bodies worded something is to shrug and move on. But too eaxh their own.
Also thank you for being the first person to genuinely make me feel unwelcome and threatened in this community. I was unaware of the aggression that would come from someone disagreeing with or disliking the wording of what I post. That is no longer the case. I often use the trek community as a place to deal with my anxiety and depression. You've shown me this can also be a place that makes both of those things much worse. You've made your point, and made me feel stupid for posting, anxious about a possible error in anything future that I post to open me up to more attacks, and nervous about being inexperienced here in general. You win. I appologize for generalizing.
