What makes the Delphiac Expanse an Expanse? What is an Expanse. Theres the Typhon Expanse to Consider to (From "Cause and Effect")

A expanse is simply a large area with some kind of characteristic. Truthfully, I not sure what you're trying to say.

Something no one has mentioned, is that the expanse may be "above" or "below" us. The galactic plane is 10000 light years thick, so it could easily be above or below us, especially as star charts and stuff have placed stuff in all deirections in our plane, but hardly anything out of it.

There also the consideration that the expanse wasn't a permanent feature, it was growing in size, so working backwards there would have been a time in the history of this part of the galaxy when the expanse was tiny. It would have been possible to easily travel around it. The Cardassian poet could have gotten to Vulcan by traveling through what would one day be the expanse.

Prior to the construction of the first of the spheres there would have been no expanse at all.

Looking up Delphic Expanse on Memory Alpha provides a reasonable definition to this matter without engaging in needless speculation. I don't mean discourage speculation, which can be a lot of fun. If the DE is in the Beta Quadrant than it is unlikely to include Alpha Quadrant features. A further note... The DE is depicted on page 1700 of Stellar Cartography: The Star Fleet Reference Library, Federation Historical Reference 2161 - 2385. This referencr is also noted in Memory Alpha. This note is hardly revealing but it's my first post and I didn't want to say anything too absurd.

Or at least the Romulans. So when Archer's antics dispersed the Expanse, this made possible (and inevitable) the Romulan War - but until then, the Expanse had protected Earth from attacks by these villain cultures.

The problem with this is that Daniels implied that the Federation existed in a timeline where the expanse still existed and the fourth season showed phantom attacks/activities by the Romulans led to the founding of the Federation.

This is a really dumb question (sorry!) but why couldn't it be in a different direction from earth than other territories? I mean, space is three dimensional so couldn't it be "under" say what we consider Vulcan systems. Sorry if that's a stupid question, I'm one of those annoying not very scientific science fiction fans :-)

I don't think that is a dumb question at all! I'm a fellow "annoying, not very scientific" fans. And I also,have trouble remembering all the little details of all the "science" through all the series. (Which is probably why I don't get all upset over "violation" of "canon", since I can't keep all of canon straight!)

I always had trouble picturing the Expanse with its hyperbaric (?) perimeter clouds...there was no way to go up, down, or around them?

I guess the trick to picturing things so that they make sense is to use the right metaphor. Think of the perimeter clouds not as a big wall, but rather as a giant bubble. A wall can be circumvented by going over ur under, but that's not possible with a bubble.

Thank you! That makes much more sense! My brain thinks of a "perimeter" more on a linear scale (because of my career field) A bubble makes sense,
