How long should a season be in this new Star Trek show?

I want 16 episodes, MINIMUM. I'd like as many as 20. But less than 16, likely split 8/8 like "The Walking Dead", is just too few IMHO. Same respects, 24-26 is too many anymore, by virtue of quality suffering at that point.

But I'll be disappointed if we only get 12-13 per season. First season, maybe I could understand it, but beyond that? 16 is just 3-4 more and its enough to satisfy a happy hybrid medium between broadcast numbers and cable numbers in episode terms.

Babylon 5 was an amazing show.... I'm still stunned.
Just rewatched the S3 opener. It wouldn't make sense at all if you're not familiar with the show already, but nonetheless a great episode - except for the dated vfx, it holds up outstandingly well.

The length doesn't matter that much imo, the story will be structured to fit the number of episodes ordered. I#d prefer 13-16 but I'm also okay with less than that or more as long as the story is good.

I've been used to 20+ episodes a season in certain series (Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis, Stargate Universe, All the Star Trek series, Etc. etc.) so i wouldn't mind 20 episodes.

I'd rather have two to three months of more quality and story packed into each episode with longer waiting time between each season than eight months of 50% good 50% diluted filler.

I hope for 26 just because Star Trek has so many different modes and I like the variety. You get great though provoking, comedic, touching, painful and just totally off the wall (or deep end) and so much more. It's a whole experience.

I imagine it's more likely though that it will be 13.

I've read that it will be 13. Although I don't think that's confirmed. I'd prefer 20 plus, and do so in general, because although I respect the higher quality that comes with less episodes, modern tv shows have such small seasons. And getting smaller by the day. We're not far off from having 5 or 6 episodes constitute a season, and with more commercials the episodes are far shorter as well. I love binge watching seasons, but I rue the day I get a Saturday off, and can easily watch in one day, 3 full seasons of my new favorite show.

Since it'll start in January 2016...as it would be in mid-season, probably 16 or 18 or 20.

DS9's season 1 had 20 episodes when it started in January 1993

Voyager's season 1 had 16 episodes when it started in January 1995.

A, I assume you mean 2017, and B, according to whom? The best I've heard is at least 6 months after Beyond.

The standard 26 episodes is fine.
That's far from standard. There's been a steady trend for fewer episodes per season in TV for decades, the 26 episodes of TNG is now just very out of date. 22 is the most we can realistically expect, and I would argue it's more likely to be less; most streaming shows don't air 22 episodes a year, and the streaming services don't have timeslots to fill or annual schedules to worry about, and don't need to be concerned with making the magic number of shows for syndication.

Those were on broadcast TV and aired over 20 years ago. On a streaming service there is no "mid-season". And for that matter broadcast mid-season shows this year got 10-16 episodes which would be a closer comparison than DS9/Voyager from 20+ years ago.

In the streaming world, the current shows all get 10-13 episodes/season. That's what CBS will mirror for the new shows. Expecting CBS to give the show the same number of episodes TNG got 30 years ago is wishful thinking and setting yourself up for disappointment.

It could be as few or as many as 52, as long as they are good. In my opinion, shorter series tend to have a better chance of being higher quality.

This.

If there are any idiots in charge that keep writing Trek the way it's been written since 1987 (DS9 aside, mostly), it'll hardly matter tell length of the season.

I do agree a 13 to 16 episode would probably be what they go for and maximize story arc and character development.
