That's right all you Adam Baldwin and Rhona Mitra lovers! The series that has them both, the greatest Star Trek series without a starship since Deep Space Nine, is returning to your airwaves. The Last Ship, starring Eric Dane and the aforementioned Baldwin and Mitra, will begin its third season on June 12, and this thread is here for us to comment, kvetch, gush or layeth the smackdown on those who would unfairly criticize our weekly helping of healing touches, firefights and NAVAL KOMBAAAAAAAT!

When last we saw our intrepid heroes, they were basking in the afterglow of stopping the super virus and restoring (partially anyway) the governing structure of these United States. But, lo! Our biologist with the healing touch has been shot! Is she dead? In a coma? Is Rhona Mitra still negotiating her contract? Find out this and more as we welcome our favorite Guided Missile Destroyer back to the small screen!

I won't even call it a guilty pleasure; I freaking LOVE this show!!!
Although with Battlebots moving to Thursdays, I will miss the 1-2 punch of awesomeness...

 

Listen, I'm just glad I don't have to subject myself to Fear The Walking Dead sunday nights.

I tried Game of Thrones, but the last episode of that made my brain hurt...

 

This is my favorite summer show. Glad to have it back, and can't wait to see where they go with the new dynamic of the show with the proto-government in St. Louis. I wonder if they'll split between land-based challenges to the new government with Dane and sea-based challenges to distributing the cure with Baldwin. Hopefully the good doctor will survive and return.

 

I didn't start watching the show until after the second season had already finished, but now it's one of my favorite current programs. I'm looking forward to being able to keep up with it as it actually airs this year.

Amazon was teasing me last week by offering the first season on blu for $12, digital HD streaming rights included. (It's up to $14.50 now.) On the one hand, I totally want it; on the other hand, I've never rewatched a whole season, let alone a whole series, of any show, and am not likely to do so soon, so on principle alone I can't quite justify the expense, minor as it is. Then again, who knows... I might just buckle and give in at some point.

But yeah, totally looking forward to seeing the Tip of the Spear back in action!

 

Anyone notice there's a lot of post-apocalyptic shows on TV these days? At least The Last Ship is one that's actually fun. Granted, it's also serious when it needs to be, and it pulls off the balance between being fun and serious a lot better than a lot of shows do, but it's the fact it's a fun show that stands out.

Also, they really have developed the crew of the Nathan James quite extensively. It's nothing to see a random background player and instantly recognize who they are. Very few ship based shows manage to pull this off. Among the Star Treks, TOS came the closest with background guys like Mr. Leslie, TNG also had a few notable background extras, but with The Last Ship it almost feels like I really spending each summer aboard the Nathan James.

Even when the episodes are average, the show is still a delight to watch. Looking forward to the new season.

 

It's a fun summer show for sure. (as well as an hour-long Navy infomercial/recruitment video) Hope it doesn't fall apart as they drift from the original premise over time.

 

In Canada, The Last Ship might air on Space, but I don't know for sure.

Yeah, the Last Ship is only marginally sci-fi, and I have no idea why Castle is on that list at all...

 

Fillion and Katic are both Canadians. Maybe that show fulfills some Can-Con regulations?

 

The Last Ship does air on Space in Canada, and the first two seasons aired the same night as they did on TNT. And they have been showing trailers for the third season, saying it'll premiere June 12, so we're all good. In the event you miss it when it first airs Sunday night, there's a late night re-run, another re-run later in the week, and Space is usually pretty good about having episodes on their website to watch online the morning after it first airs.

As for Castle being on Space, I really don't understand it. In fact when Nathan Fillion was interviewed a few years back on Innerspace (a sci-fi news show Space produces) he was shocked to learn Space airs Castle and asked the interviewer "how the hell is that a space show?" Indeed, why does Space air Castle has become so frequently asked that the matter was eventually addressed on Innerspace. Basically it all boils down to the fact that it stars Nathan Fillion, who some of you may remember from some obscure sci-fi show from a little over a decade ago which also starred the guy who plays Mike Slattery on The Last Ship ( ) and has nods to "geek culture." Certainly the commercials Space shows for Castle frequently show scenes meant to bait sci-fi fans, like Jonathan Frakes asking for Richard Castle's autograph claiming "I'm your Number One fan." For what it's worth, syndicated re-runs of Castle apparently do awesome ratings on Space.

Makes sense. As Netflix and other services continue to blur the line between movies and TV, and TV looks more and more cinematic all the time, (big-budget) movies still have the upper hand in terms of production budgets to put amazing stuff on screen; shooting in cheap locations with few extras and saying in dialogue that the world as we know it is gone is a cost-effective way of leveling the stakes-playing field.

Agreed. I wish they'd do even more of it, honestly, and would gladly take more episodes with fewer action sequences as a result, but the show certainly beats the pants off of Trek in this regard, Voyager and Enterprise especially (when there was far less opportunity for off-screen crew turnover than on TOS/TNG/DS9).

 

Because Castle has time travel, Mayan artifacts that open alternate universes, invincible people, cloaking devices, AIs on Mars training missions, handheld death rays, superheroes who can cut people in half from skull to nuts in one slash of a sword, vampires, averting World War III, steampunk, scifi conventions, tons of Firefly references, ninjas...
