Independence Day - Resurgence

Apart from the trailers can't say I've been following tonnes about this movie. I do remember ages ago there was talk they might film a ID4 2 & 3 back to back or something? Anyone know if that's still the case? So is this new movie just gonna end on a cliffhanger and we'll all have to come back again in 2 or 3 years, or is it simply a standalone sequel with a beginning, middle and end?

I have to admit, they got me with that one. When I first saw it I thought it was a regular Army ad, until it got to the end.

The War of 96 didn't throw you off?
Still think they should have called it "War of the Worlds".

The plan was to make 2 and 3 at once but Fox, smart for once, thought it was too big a risk. (Unlike the mess of Avatar they are making.) From what I have heard they then made this a stand alone film that could set up spinoffs and sequels with other aliens and such.

Well, to be fair, Emmerich wanted to do sequels to Stargate as well.

As for this film, it's kind of weird. The trailer for Jurassic World left me more interested and a little bit nostalgic. This one feels different. Not sure what to think of it.

Judging from the trailers it looks like the same brainless fun of the original movie and i'll be definitely seeing it, humanity retroengineering the Alien tech and going all in by building their own spacefleet and bases. I just wonder if they also improved their computer virus technology :D Still a bit sad that Will Smith won't reprise his role but what can you do.

Easy don't give into his demands. He wanted $50 million .. I think we're all in the wrong professions

Well I liked this too. I mean if a real actual alien invasion happened and we just managed to win by the barest margin the world would have definitely be changed. It would be a total mess in fact. Rebuilding would take many years. The movie estimate of 20 years is generous in my opinion.

One thing I don't like about these movies is their lack of guts to show certain parts of the world being attacked. I've read the reasons that they don't want to offend and all but in movies like this we see NY the USA and lots of Western countries being obliterated but we never see the Middle East attacked by the aliens. I'd love to see the Kaaba or something like Mecca being vaporized by aliens.
Um, you do realize how offensive that would be to Muslims? Not to derail, but there's a difference between "having guts" and being incredibly insensitive to a group of people of a specific faith.
To be fair he wants to remake Stargate into a trilogy and I have a feeling if ID4-2 does well that he will get his wish.
Oh, I know that's what he's working on now. I was more referring to at the time of the original Emmerich probably wanted to do a sequel. And, I'm pretty excited for the Stargate sequel :)

But it's OK to show things like the Vatican being destroyed ....... Catholics are also people of a specific faith and you don't think they'd be offended too?

Jerusalem would have been a good one to show.

Mecca was saved - the city destroyer was en-route there when the americans organised a counter offensive ("about bloody time, what do they plan to do?").

Not as much as Muslims. If you look up how strict Muslims are with regards to how their faith is portrayed in any visual medium you'll recognize that Catholics, Jews and Christians are not on the same playing field.

Catholics and other Christian denominations have been in the mass media for years, and portrayed in various ways, both offensive and inoffensive. And whether they as a group are offended or not by St. Peter's being destroyed seems to have little bearing on what Hollywood actually does.

Jerusalem would be a bit more broad stroke, as it would not be a specific faith that was targeted, but rather larger landmark and a huge gathering of humanity. Since three faiths value it, you would be hard pressed to say that a single faith was being the target, unlike Mecca or St. Peter's.

:wtf:

Is that true? Last time i remember people were losing their shit when the first A lister got 20 million and that became the go to salary for A lister and big bockbusters. People now call for 50?? :wtf::wtf:

Yep. Looking forward to it. Can't wait.
