Is it too soon for another one of these? Mine: 1. Star Trek 2. Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home 3. Star Trek: First Contact 4. Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan 5. Star Trek V: The Final Frontier 6. Star Trek: The Motion Picture 7. Star Trek III: The Search for Spock 8. Star Trek IV: The Undiscovered Country 9. Star Trek: Generations 10. Star Trek: Insurrection 11. Star Trek Into Darkness 12. Star Trek: Nemesis
If my opinion is really that important to you, I'll admit that it's actually a tie between Nemesis and Final Frontier being the worst Trek movies. The final decision came down to esoteric things such as special effects and music (in which Nemesis is clearly the superior of the two.) But they are both absolutely awful films.
I wouldn't say that it's IMPORTANT, but I thought that the whole point of these discussion forums is to express such opinions, which personally I enjoy doing. Thank you for your input. (-:
Well to be fair, you never asked us to give our opinions. You just made a list and other people made theirs.
1. Star Trek: The Motion Picture 2. Star Trek Into Darkness 3. Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country 4. Star Trek III: The Search for Spock 5. Star Trek (2009) 6. Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan 7. Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home 8. Star Trek V: The Final Frontier 9. Star Trek: Nemesis 10. Star Trek: Generations 11. Star Trek: First Contact 12. Star Trek: Insurrection
You're right, and I apologize for that. I thought it would be understood that I posted my rankings in order to kick off a discussion, but evidently that didn't come through. In the future I'll be clearer about such things. SPIN
5/5 SF classic (in same league as the likes of Empire, Blade Runner, Alien/s, T1/2, etc) TWOK 4/5 very good TSFS FC TUC TVH ST09 STID 3/5 good/ok TMP GEN 2/5 ok/bad TFF NEM INS
ST: I like this movie! It's exciting! TWOK: Kirk full of doubt and screwing things up is my favourite Kirk. See also: Obsession and The Conscience of the King STID: More Kirk doubt and fuck-ups with bonus Cumberbatch. TUC: My second-favourite Kirk is the used-up, I'm-too-old-for-this-shit, fuck Klingons right in the ear because you killed my son, Kirk. TVH: It's fun. TSFS: Lots of fun McCoy shenanigans. TMP: Boring but not terrible. TFF: Terrible with a few redeeming triumvirate moments. I was about to hit 'Post' and then I realized that I forgot all the TNG movies. I think that says all that needs to be said on that subject.
We'll all have to come back here in a couple months and edit our rankings TWoK - A classic. Two over the top actors chewing up the scenes and doing it well. FC - Could be my #1. Terrific movie - TNG's finest addition to the genre by far. TUC - Still tear up during the end of movie credits. TVH - Still a fun watch. Holds up very well with time. Star Trek - Probably could interchange this installment with 3 and 4. Our heroes reintroduced and it was done wonderfully. TSfS - A crew that is dedicated to their shipmate & friend to the extreme... even stealing the Enterprise! TMP - The best ship reveal in history... slow, but probably the most "trek" trek movie. GEN - Picard and Kirk play well off each other albeit in a cockamamie story. INS - TNG's made for TV movie. It gets too much criticism I think. NEM - What a movie this could have been. The right story, not the right director. The best space battle scene in all of trek. STID - Could have been at the top of this list (probably #1) had they not plagiarized TWoK, rehashed old stuff and made Spock into a star fleet/superhero thing. The ending killed the movie for me. TFF - "What does God need with a Starship"? ... Uhura dancing... need I say more? All in all I have a special place in my heart for all of these. I've seen them all many times. Basically #1 are swappable. #3-#5 are swappable. #6-#10 are swappable. #11 are swappable. They are trek and trek is better than most other stuff, whether it's great trek or not.
TWOK Everything else. Insurrection. #ETA I should add that the gap between INS and WOK is so small that it's hardly even worth mentioning. Suffice it to say, Trek films are one giant mash of fun and entertaining mediocrity, with each film having its strengths and weaknesses. The best aren't nearly as good as some make them to be, likewise for the worst. Yet, as a Trek fan, I can stumble across any one of them while surfing and feel inclined to watch. I still get enjoyment out of them all and can appreciate them for what they are. I've also found trying to rank them to be a fruitless and ultimately pointless endeavor (as my opinion is subject to change five minutes from now), much like trying to rank any Star Wars film after Empire.
