Menagerie Cometh (part duex...)

Andorian Zabathu:

Hey sorry for the late replies, but thanks everyone!
The Zabathu is only mentioned, with no real description to speak of, so i designed it like both the Sark and the Rastipod.
I use any and all info I can get for these beasties, including rpg materials (so many of the species that I will be presenting will be almost wholly designed by my own imagination). The Zabathu in particular had nothing to go by at all other than being horse-like. Now, seeing as Andoria is practically a frozen world, I figured that no animal there would survive without some adaptations to the cold and ice...so the Zabathu has a low center of gravity, small ears, long nasal passages, and a thick layer of blubber to keep it warm. It also has claws to grip the ice better. Also being an Andorian "mammal", it would have some sign of the antennae that both the Andorians and Aenar have, just much smaller to cope with the freezing temperature of Andoria. They are the intake-looking structures above the ears atop the head.
And again I apologize for not responding to comments, as I have been very busy, so I just post the pics as I've got to them done for your enjoyment :)
Cheers!

Nice work. Weren't the glommers genetically engineered specifically to be tribble predators? I suppose they would be released to the wild on infested planets. Great interpretation. I like how weirdly crab-like they are.

Ok this one needs some explaining...in the TOS ep Squire of Gothos, Trelane has a few "dead" trophy animals in his castle. Trelane had an interesting crocodillian or two on his walls...this animal is a representation of one of those animals in life...
Now, fast forward to DS9 in the ep "Crossfire", Quark tells Odo, that if he changes into animals too many times or for too long, that he will turn into a Trellan Crocodile, or a Klingon Targ. I know its a reach, but I basically say the Trellan Crocodile is the same animal as Trelane's trophy. So here it is...

Good work all around Chris!
You made me to remember of the old books:
Aliens in Space, An Illustrated Guide to the Inhabited Galaxy
Alien World: The Complete Illustrated Guide

You can edit your own: Alien Worlds of Star Trek - an illustrated guide to the fauna ;)

These are so good, I'm deeply satisfied to see them. To see alien animals. Budgets make them so rare in canon, but they're important to fill out the universe.

Have you seen Dougal Dixon or Wayne Barlowe's work?

When I was a kid I read Dixon's The New Dinosaurs (online version), a book speculating what they'd look like today if they hadn't gone extinct, and I've loved this sort of thing on and off ever since.

Barlowe's stuff is especially eerie and disconcerting to human eyes. I like how more alien it feels. He's worked on movies and his I loved the documentary Alien Planet on one of the science channels.

Interesting stuff. But don't forget that not all dinosaurs went extinct. Birds are going strong, they are the last remaining dinosaurs.

I would second all these recommendations and add Principles of Creature Design by Whitlatch, the same woman who did The Wildlife of Star Wars. Fascinating look into the thought process of designing fictional animals.

Thanks everyone!
This next beastie is 100% made-up for Trek by me. It seems that in all of Trekdom, there are no creatures ever mentioned on Tellar. I mean I have looked and there is nothing...even Nausicaans have creatures mentioned and in non-canon material such as RPGs.
Anyway, here is one of many to come creatures for Tellar...(oh it's analogous to a baboon here in size and behavior, oh except that males butt heads together to show dominance.)
