Teams whining for a new stadium

As for the Trop: Its actual playing area isn't that bad, I guess, although I always thought they should paint the inside surface of the roof with a starfield or cloudscape to make it look less like a damn office building. And they should gut and rebuild the interior concourses, which look like the 80's threw up.

When was the last time you went to a game at the Trop?

I went last year and was reasonably impressed. They have spent some time improving the concourse areas, there is a nice selection of merch and over priced food items, its pleasant sitting in 72 degree air conditioned comfort to watch a game, and the employees are extremely friendly, personable and fun.
I would go back - even though its a 3 hour drive from my house.

I say if they build 'em with public money, then the admission should be free. Yeah, that'll fly.

Maybe not free. That would be chaos. But considering how difficult a time the Diamondbacks have had with filling Chase Field most of the season apart from opening day, I think it would behoove them to substantially lower ticket prices for the upper deck and the baseline/bullpen reserve seats on the lower deck. I figure they'd make a lot more money on concessions that way (especially if they cracked down on outside food).

Any city building a new MLB field is run by fools, there is NO real threat of anyone moving because there is nowhere for them to go, baseball teams require huge support bases, Charlotte, Portland, Nashville, San Antonio, not a chance, and Montreal is a pipe dream, the Jays will move to Mexico before Canada gets another team.

I've wondered about the possibility of putting a major American sports team in either Mexico or Puerto Rico. Unfortunately, both areas have such poor reputations for being high crime, low income areas that I doubt many players or other team personnel would be willing to stay there.

As for the NBA & NHL, can they please just give Seattle an expansion team so that every other team can stop threatening to move there every time ownership gets twitchy?!?!?!?!?!?! :scream: The damn city is a menace! Seriously, in the last 5 years I can recall at least 3 teams threatening to move to Seattle-- the Sacramento Kings, the New Orleans Hornets (before they became the Pelicans), and the Arizona Coyotes (who also talked about moving to either Hamilton or Quebec City).

I've watched several Baseball games in Puerto Rico, they have several minor league level baseball stadiums there and great places to watch the game. I would wholly endorse a team in San Juan, it would be a welcome place for baseball.

What's going to happen to the Ed Dome now that the Rams have moved out?

I dunno. What has San Antonio been doing with the Alamodome since the Spurs moved out?

So far, every major sports venue in the Phoenix area is still in use save one, Veterans Memorial Coliseum. The Phoenix Suns used to play there until they moved to America West Arena (now Talking Stick Resort Arena) in 1992. Since then, it has occasionally served as home for minor league hockey teams such as the Phoenix Roadrunners & Phoenix Mustangs. Both of those teams are now defunct, as are the leagues that they played in. Nowadays, they mostly just use it for concerts during the Arizona State Fair.

San Diegans are poised to vote on public financing for a new stadium the the Chargers this summer. If the ballot measure is turned down, the Chargers will leave for Inglewood.

Is there no possibility that the other team in Inglewood could be the Raiders and not the Chargers?

Because when all is said and done, the Raiders need a new stadium much more than the Chargers do. Never mind WHO pays for it.

There is, yes. If San Diegans vote in favor of offering public funds to Dean Spanos, it is expected that the Chargers will remain in San Diego thereby freeing the Raiders to work out a deal with the Rams and move to L.A. once it is finalized. The Raiders are also still considering a move to Vegas if they they can get a stadium built there.

I agree. The speculation I'v read is that the league voted in Spanos' favor because he has been such a "good soldier" for much longer than Mark Davis. Supposedly, the rest of the owners have very little respect for Davis. If he thinks his ridiculous look has no effect on the way others see him, then Mark Davis is way out of touch. He looks like a clown and gets treated like one.

Everyone knows that Davis' endgame is to wind up in Vegas, whereas Spanos and Kroenke (the latter of whom can produce most of the financing) are fine with being perfect strangers in a stadium.

I don't know that Vegas is his endgame. It may be the best choice until the Charger's situation is settled one way or the other. Some still believe that the Vegas talk is still just a ploy to get something out of the City of Oakland. But besides that, the big rub in Vegas is getting a stadium built AND getting league approval. We'll have to wait and see. The Chargers' situation should be resolved before the start of the season.

If the Raiders move out, will there be any likelihood that the A's might simply demolish the Coliseum - I'd buy tickets to see that, BTW - and build a new ballpark on the same site? (The Oracle Arena will also be empty soon.)

The A's wouldn't have that choice, as the Coliseum is jointly owned by the city of Oakland as well as Alameda County.

Oakland has been rather transparently unwilling to spend the money to make even incremental improvements to the Coliseum. Doing a demolition, a cleanup, and a new construction would cost a hell of a lot more money than said incremental improvements. Basically, Oakland's in enough of a financial hole as it is; there's no reason the city or county should fork out the cash. If the A's want to stay in Oakland and don't want to pay for a new stadium up-front, then they can do what I did for my house -- go to a bank and ask for a loan. There's no reason for taxpayers to be subsidizing private business.

The real issue for the A's is the moronic agreement Selig brokered that gave the Giants the territorial rights to San Jose and the right to block any move by any team to that area.

You've agreed with me on many occasions, you just don't like to admit it and you delete your posts saying so about thirty seconds after you post them.

For someone who claims to be a conservative, you sure do jump at the opportunity to support public funds being used to fund billionaires' monuments.

On another note, I'm 31 and I can't recall the last time the Cubs were in first place and the Yankees were in last place. We truly are in a bizarro timeline.
