X-Men: Apocalypse announced for May 2016

Stark is every bit as front and center as Mystique. More importantly though, since when is Mystique a B-lister for the X-Men?

Yeah, I've always thought of Mystique as one of their big a-list villains.
That was a pretty cool trailer, I wish they had left Wolverine's appearance as a surprise, but I can see wanting to try to use him to draw more people to the movie.
Outside of Jackman's role (which has always been reported to be a brief cameo), Lawrence is easily the biggest and most marketable star of the entire cast.

So? The X-Men franchise is all about big casts, there is no reason to have a main character of the entire franchise. Especially not when its a b-list character being weirdly shoved into a spotlight because the actress did some popular YA movies. At least Wolverine was a popular character, and Hugh Jackman was just great in general. Lawrence is an ok actor playing a b-lit character.

Comparing it to the MCU, even Robert Downey jr/Tony Stark, probably the most popular of the "main" Marvel actors/characters, doesn't get shoved in front of everyone else like Lawrence was in that trailer. The MCU manages to get a good balance, and the FOX X-Men movies kind of did that in First Class, so its annoying to see they haven't learned anything and are just shoving Lawrence to replace Jackman. The difference being, though, that eventually people will forget about Hunger Games just like they've forgotten about stuff like Twilight (that's probably why she seems to have changed her mind about this being her last X-Men movie :shifty:) and then Lawrence will probably be shoved to the top of the X-Men. Jackman stayed on top by generally being awesome, Lawrence is only there because of her name, which isn't that big to begin with and won't stay that way.

Its just an annoyance. I don't even dislike her, its mostly just eye rolling how she's getting so much focus. She'll fade faster then Jackman, and FOX will probably focus on a new character. Meanwhile, Marvel will keep having a huge amount of popular characters and doing better then FOX and their ____ & The X-Men franchise. A franchise I like, just to be clear, but could be better.
Jennifer Lawrence is a lot more than just an actress from some young adult movies, she's also won an Oscar for Silver Linings Playbook, along with nominations for Winter's Bone, America Hustle and Joy. She won a BAFTA for AH, along with a nomination for SLP, won Golden Globes for AH, SLP, Joy and was nominated for Winter's Bone, and a SAG for SLP. She's also one of the the most popular actresses in Hollywood right, so given all of that it definitely makes sense that they would emphasize her role in the X-Men movies. They got pretty lucky when they cast her in First Class.

The difference is that Stark is not front and center in every MCU movie. The MCU does 2 movies a year, and 2014 didn't have any RDJ appearances at all. Even when he does appear, he's been the main character less than half the time (and its arguable whether he's THE main character, and not just the most popular, in Avengers). The X-Men do one movie every few years, with a few spin offs from time to time. So, they have less variety, making a "main" character more noticeable, and arguably more central to their whole franchise.

Also, Mystique is only an A-List X-Men villain in the comics. She was d-list in the first 3 X-Men movies, and B-list in First Class and DoFP. Now, the trailers are trying to make her THE hero character. Not Professor X, who probably should be. He's a better character and is being played by a better actor. But, James McAvoy wasn't in Hunger Games, so you get the woman who doesn't even seem to want to appear as the character (seriously, if she really wants to play Mystique, she should be spending most of the time as Mystique, not "disguised" as a human), and a character who sided against Xavier in both previous movies, now suddenly leading the X-Men.

Oh, yeah, I'm sure fans of the average audience for Joy and the godawful American Hustle are just clamoring to watch X-Men: Apocalypse :vulcan:. That's like saying that an X-Force movie should star the cast of Pitch Perfect 2, since it made a lot of money based off its budget and won a lot of accolades (from things like the Teen Choice and MTV movie awards, but those matter about as much as the Golden Globes or any other stupid movie awards). Some Trivia, PP2 actually has a higher rating on Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic then Joy.

I'm just saying that Fox needs to move away from focusing on a "main character". Heck, at least with Marvel Movies Robert Downey jr's career seemed to be in the gutter, and Marvel helped bring him back and make him a big draw. He wasn't hired because he was in some lame critical darling or forgettable YA series. To be clear, I don't really like Lawrence, but I don't hate her. She's not a very good actress, but the X-Men movies have seen worse. I'm just tired of almost every X-Men movie turning the actual X-Men into sidekicks for a main character. The fact that Lawrence isn't half as talented or interesting as Hugh Jackman is secondary.

seriously, if she really wants to play Mystique

She doesn't. Both she and Fassbender had the misfortune of signing their three-picture deals for X-Men just before they both exploded in popularity -- Lawrence for Winter's Bone and The Hunger Games, Fassbender with Shame, A Dangerous Method and Prometheus. They're both being paid peanuts, and Lawrence in particular has voiced her unhappiness with both her pay and the makeup work needed (which is why they switched her to wearing a bodysuit in Days of Future Past, as opposed to the full-body makeup and prosthetics).

She didn't, past tense. Just recently did another interview where she said she wanted to keep playing Mystique.

Those were pretty big movies, so yeah there probably is quite a bit of crossover between the audiences. It's not like people only like one type of movie. I'm a big fan of the X-Men movies, and while I haven't seen them yet, I do plan on watching American Hustle and Joy.
What was so bad about American Hustle? I was under the impression that it was really popular and got a pretty good reaction from the critics and the audience.
As for the "stupid movie awards", you do realize the Oscars, SAGs, BAFTAs, and Golden Globes are some of the biggest, mostly highly respected awards in the movie industry, so no they are not "stupid". I'm not a big fan of some of the awards, but that doesn't change the fact that they are a huge deal in the industry, so it makes sense that they would want to promote their hugely popular, well respected, Oscar, SAG, and Bafter winning actress above a Micheal Fassbender, and a bunch of relative nobodies. I'm not even talking about whether or not we like her, but from an industry standpoint, if you have somebody like Jennifer Lawrence in your movie, you'd be stupid not to put her front and center.

Joblo.com does a poll every now and then about what release you're looking forward to the most. For the summer season, all the comic book movies are part of that poll aswell. Captain America is right now at 854 votes, Suicide Squad at 407, Jason Bourne is at 75, and the new X-Men at 74....

Ofcourse a poll like this isn't a be all and end all or anything, but I do find it curious that more people are looking forward to Suicide Squad than the new X-Men.

Wow, I'm surprised. This is No. 2 on my list of must see films this year (after Civil War). I've zero interest in Suicide Squad beyond morbid curiosity !

She's not a very good actress

I could explain why you're wrong, but I guess it would be a waste of time.

And in case you're interested, I hated the one Hunger Games film I've seen. Try Silver Linings Playbook.

At this point, I have to say I'm most excited to see what Sophie Turner does with Jean Grey. I don't care about JLaw or Hoult's Beast anymore. Yawn city.

They're making Captain America 3 into Avengers 2.5 explicitly so they can bring Tony Stark in.

Come on now, don't be ridiculous. She's been in every X-Men movie so far except the Wolverine solos and was Magneto's most trusted lieutenant in the first 3 (until he kicked her to the curb). Rebecca Romijn's Mystique was easily second only to Magneto of the villains, and was consistently in the upper echelon of important characters across all 3 movies (unlike poor Rogue).

J law's mystique is so much better than rdj tony strak. rdj plays himself in the mcu films and his ego is to big for my screen. jlaw at least still acts like mystique

people will bash her for not been blue all the time but she has said she does not like the make up on skin, it may very well be an allergy that she has.

She doesn't, actually. As for RDJ, it's just coincidence that he's playing someone similar to himself.

As for ego...that's what being a less-than-pristine character means.

Then they should have dropped that stupid "Mystique must be naked" stuff.

I've never understood why they felt they had to do that. I understand the idea behind it, but the comics version of Mystique and tons of other shapeshifters in media over the decades have worn clothes so there was no real reason for her to be naked. We also saw her appear in clothes when she took other people's form, so obviously she can make clothes, so there's no reason she couldn't have just made clothes when she was in her regular form.

At least we'll finally see the X-Men in some of their traditional costumes.

I've always thought of RDJ as TINO. Tony In Name Only. He doesn't play the Tony Stark I'm familiar with. He brings his own brand of charm to the character but it's worked out well.

It sure did. Can you image where we would be today if Tom Cruise had taken the role?
