X-Men: Apocalypse announced for May 2016

Even the Collider Movie Talk guys weren't really jazzed by the movie. And they were more or less kind to BvS with their likes and disappointments.

Based on what I've seen so far (and what I think of BvS) if this thing really is getting bad press I might have to start suspecting some general "if it's not Civil War (or Disney's Marvel in general) it sucks!" attitude.

Or maybe their honest opinion is that Batman v Superman sucked, and they think Apocalypse wasn't very good. God knows I agree with them about BvS, and so do a lot of people. I have the feeling that less people would be rallying against critics if the critics agreed with their opinions on certain movies :shifty:

^ I don't like critics in general, and haven't for a very long time. It doesn't matter if their opinions on something are good or bad, I still think they're useless.

Chris Stuckmann's review. Chris is normally more fair in his reviews and he is a licensed critic on RT.

shouldn't that make us question their credibility?

I was thinking the same thing. :)

I watched the video and they said the biggest faults they had were JLAW (who allegedly phoned it in hard), the QS subplot that goes nowhere, the film going down hill after the first 40 minutes, the action scenes (Singer is known for not being an action director) and the finale looking fake and just feeling unresolved.

With BvS, they had less to complain about, by virtue of the movie not being as awesome and epic as they thought a movie with Batman and Superman fighting each other should've been.

I don't get how that's supposed to make sense.
They were expecting more of a versus movie. A dueling of ideologies, a jousting wits and an exploration why each character does things the way they do. Not, Batman being a psychotic mad man whose out to kill Superman to assuage his own paranoia.

Like everyone, they were annoyed with the JL set ups that stopped the movie, and not everyone was sold on Eisenberg's Luthor. However, from what we're hearing about X-Men Apocalypse, it seems like Singer may just have laid an egg with his crescendo X-Men film. We have 18 days in the US, to wait and find out for ourselves.

The fact that X3 remains the second-highest-grossing film in the X-franchise in spite of negative critical response is a direct counter to the idea that the negative critical reception for X-Men Apocalypse actually means/will mean anything whatsoever, even some 18 days ahead of said film's release.

Technically, X3 is now 3rd in line. Deadpool supplanted DOFP with a worldwide gross of $762 million, to DOFP's $748 million.

The sentiment is correct though. Compare X3 to the films it competed against back in the summer of 2006.

X3 in early May
The Da Vinci Code in late May
Superman Returns in June
POTC Dead Man's Chest in July

Superman Returns as a "Certified Fresh" rating on RT, and all the other movies I listed are scored rotten. And yet, Superman Returns was the lowest grossing big budget movie of the summer of 2006, with only $391 million world wide to show for it's 19 week run.

POTC broke a billion
The Da Vinci Code $758 million
X3 $460 million

Also look at the Transformers and Twilight movies. All rotten, and all are multi billion dollar franchises.

Most of the reviews have focused on the plethora of moving parts - too many characters, too many fights. That seems to be the primary complaint, which depending on your perspective isn't that big of a deal anyway.

Also, critics loved Deadpool and allegedly, WB owns RT.

And the common thread I've noticed is critics want their fiction movies to be fun or entertain them with a good time.

Excellent point re: Deadpool. And certainly fits with the "want to have a good time" as a common element rather than taking things on their own merits.

Could be. And could be Apocalypse is a case of laying an egg; certainly I've been concerned about it since they have such an uninspiring choice for Apocalypse himself. But too much of the criticism I read about BvS had an underlying "This movie isn't doing it right by Marvel's [and Deadpool's] Golden Standard."

But obviously critics shouldn't be dismissed without consideration.

Box Office Mojo lists X-Men: The Last Stand second in terms of total grosses behind Deadpool and ahead of Days of Future Past, although DoFP did gross more worldwide than TLS.

Is it not out till May 27th in America? Out May 18th here in Britain. Man I love getting all these movies early :D

It gets 4/5 on Digital Spy at least. Not that I've read the review; I don't see the point of reading a review and potentially spoiling a movie I'm definitely going to see regardless. I'll make my own mind up.

I take movie reviews in the popular media with a grain of salt.

However, just because a movie has mass lowbrow appeal and makes a shipload of movie... that doesn't necessarily mean it's actually a good film.
