Episode VIII production photos (possible spoilers)

Late to find this thread. If you hadn't told me what those images in the OP's link were from, I'd guess it was from a new Matrix movie. The costuming jsut does not look like Star Wars. Way too formal goth. Hopefully it will look a little more "galaxy far, far, away" in the film than it does here.

I think it was already posted in one of the TFA thread, but JJ Abrams did do an interview where he said that they purposefully mimicked A New Hope in TFA as a way to reintroduce the universe, and that things would be going in a different direction now. That was pretty much what I've been assuming would be the case.
I really liked Looper, so I can't wait to see where Johnson takes things in VIII.

Abrams says lots of things.

I was thinking Fifth Element.

The Echo Base podcast was talking about a fake leaked EP8 script. I hadn't heard anything about this
They were positive it was fake, but allegedly this is the plot of the movie:
It's basically ESB. Rey is off training with Luke while Ren trains with Snoke. Meanwhile, Leia Poe and Finn go to the new New Republic capitol to try and help in the chaos of the loss of Hosnian Prime. The Senate has elected a dictator (hunh?!) played by Del Toro. This planet has an impenetrable shield to protect them from the First Order (uh, why didn't Hosnian Prime have this?!). There's a lot of corruption and fear going on there and double agents working for the FO. Leia ends up staging a coup and overthrowing Del Toro. They discover Phasma on the planet who disables the shield enabling a FO attack led by Kylo. Kylo captures Finn and Poe and tortures them so Rey will feel it in the force and be led into a trap.
Given that they've described EP8 as breaking from the mold and being weird and trippy, I really don't expect it to be such a by the numbers plot like this. I'm expecting extensive flashbacks (ie Force Visions) to the Jedi Academy, personally.

"...an impenetrable shield to protect them from the First Order (uh, why didn't Hosnian Prime have this?!)."

Simple. Planetary shields require a lot of power, so most planets that have them have them turned off unless their is a perceived threat. And until Starkiller Based opened fire, the New Republic did not take the First Order to be a serious threat.

Also it was speculated that Alderaan had planetary shields and had them up against the Death Star...they didn't stop it for more than a tenth of a second.

You'd think the novelization or something would have mentioned that Hosnian Prime had some massive shield that protected it from traditional attacks. It would be a good plot point; the necessity of the Starkiller weapon is that it can attack instantly and overwhelmingly to take out a planet before you can turn the shield on.

But I find the idea of a shield protecting the entire planet waaaaaaaay out there. If Coruscant didn't have that at the height of the Old Republic, how did these jamokes come up with it? The general idea seems to be that technology was actually better back then, and that tech advancements are generally static in the GFFA; ships and weapons are almost identical thousands of years in the past after all.

But is any of that still canon?

Unknown.

Like It is presently unknown if Alderaan had a planetary shield. The only such shields we know about are those on Hoth, the Death Stars, Starkiller Base, and some smaller units used during the Clone Wars that are likely similar to the one on Hoth. I will note that the shields used in the Clone Wars are more or less the same as the ones used by the Gungans on Naboo in how they function. That also works for the one on Hoth, if they walkers could just walk through the shields.

They've continued to release expansions to The Old Republic MMORPG after the 2014 EU reboot, does that count?

So far it doesn't seem so. Indeed, I'd say Malacore's inclusion in Rebels rather precludes the possibility as ToR is deeply interconnected with KotOR 1 & 2 and it's depiction in canon is a significant departure from the game's.

I seem to recall someone at Lucasfilm saying they liked was Bioware was doing and were not going to mess with it directly, but it would also be more or less separate, except when they decide to borrow stuff. There have already been Old Republic references in Clone Wars and Rebels.

I was pleased VII featured a fleeting reference to the clones, and thus II and III, as I think there needs to be some acknowledgment that the prequels happened even if some people enjoy deriding them. I don't have the hate for the prequels that many people seem to carry and I think to maintain the feeling of it being a saga there does need to be "stories about what happened". In our history big events from a century ago are still remembered so surely the events from I-III would be too (away from the backwater places like Jakku).

^^Although, aside from a few fleeting references to the Clone Wars in ANH and key details regarding Anakin/Vader's backstory, the OT didn't really talk very much about history, so it isn't really all that out of place if this trilogy doesn't address this stuff either.
