Another Re-watching DS9 thread (spoilers)

Yes, I'm aware of how time travel works in the trekverse but we aren't given any reason why Sisko & Co's incursion here could cause the elimination of Star Fleet. In City they gave us something - the Nazi's won, blah blah. Here, nothing.



They left Bell's body there for the police to find. No reason Sisko's picture should have been on the ID.

(Time travel hasn't changed in the 2009 movie either, they just don't want to admit it. )

We kind of get left to fill in the blanks, but it's not hard to see how the bell riots could end up being a greater civil uprising, or part of one, that could lead to all sorts of ripple effects further down the line.

And yeah, the 2009 movie....well, I guess time will tell, though it goes out of its way to try to sleight of hand it in dialogue, and then there's the fact that the universe hasn't gone bye byes because of the huge paradox yet (which may also be am explanation for the starfleet is missing in Ds9....the universe is a storm of booming paradox, with the instigators being the last to go at the eye of the storm. After all, if starfleet/sisko/red matter jellyfish never exist, the timeline can never be altered, so they do exist and alter the timeline which means that never exist....all together now O'brien fans....)

I enjoyed this episode.

Why use Kira to act as Ghemor's daughter? She resembled his real daughter. He is a member of the Central Command. The OO couldn't even turn on their listening devices without his permission. They needed him to reveal himself as a dissident. They knew Kira wouldn't break. Hence this whole plan.

Funniest exchange?

"KIRA: Don't worry, he's on our side. I think. Come on.
GARAK: Major, I don't think I've ever seen you looking so ravishing."

Best line?

"GARAK: Treason, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder."

Wonderful episode. I won't go 4 stars, but a solid 3.5 for me.

Some aspects of the episode strain at its credibility, but the Cardassians were established as a people who plotted and schemed rather circuitously. The dialogue and the performances were excellent. I'm glad there was no "five lights" moment.

Agree. It built on the importance of the Cardassian family in their society as we've seen in a couple episodes before so I didn't think it was out of the realm of trek reality.

The whole mythology of Star Trek is based on progression of humanity toward love, compassion, and collectivism. The idea of Past Tense is that if you reverse one of the major steps along the way you break the continuum. The problem with that (If you accept the mythology) is that we know things got a lot worse before they got better, with World War III, controlling the military with drugs and all.

Maybe somehow preserving the sanctuary districts prevented World War III, and nobody invented warp drive because there's no money in it?

Or, better, maybe it slightly changed the date of Cochrane's flight, so there was a Ferengi ship in the area instead of a Vulcan ship, and Earth joined the Ferengi alliance.

Been very busy at work. Also I've gotten into a kick of watching movies from the 40s and 50s. But I did watch a couple of episodes. I also skipped a lot that I'd seen before and wasn't ready to revisit agaib, abd finally made it down to....

The Adversary. Which is the season finale. Liked this episode quite a bit, what with Sisko's promotion, the ship, the mystery, etc. Some of it had a pod person/the Thing vibe to it that I liked.

Odo killing another Changling, even if though it was mostly an accident, was a shock the first time I saw it, and obviously a major plot point that affects things going forward. Odo always has a special concern for life of all kinds, even though he's quite gruff.

Since you are getting into the later seasons, it would be worth your while to check out political thrillers and war movies from the fifties and sixties. "The Sand Pebbles" is almost required viewing, IMO.[/QUOTE][/QUOTE]

I love the Sand Pebbles. Great movie that I have on blu-ray. Want to watch it again at some point.

Not the best season ender in this series but it was above average.

Good drama hunting down the changeling... good death scene, goo - then dust... interesting.

I had no problem with the Tzenkethi. Obviously a plant by the Founders...

Sisko makes Captain .... interesting... is Bajor in the Federation yet?

Before we move on to season 4, let me say three things about the dreadful Meridian. First, it's dreadful (yes, I already said it, but it bears repeating). Second, Frakes made some curious directing choices that made it feel as if he was just trying things out rather than taking things seriously. Third, this was the first time I felt Farrell had any acting talent. Dax's dialogue is weak, but it feels as if Farrell was looking for opportunities to improve the story through her performance.

Wow, the same total as season 2. (yes, I checked the math :-) DS9 seems to be showing a pattern here. The the seasons start off with a bang then peters out. This is 2 seasons in a row that show this trend.

Garak is a great character in DS9 and one who always seems to 'shine' when he has a larger part in a episode. 2 of my favourite episodes in the whole series star Garak in a large secondary role.

He just plays it so if he was telling you he was going to kill you he still did it in almost a gentleman manner and with a large smile on his face.

I was astonished when I realized how few episodes he was in.

Not many, but often in critical episodes. I believe ISB lobbied several times to have him elevated to the main cast.
