The scale is definitely impressive as far as that goes. It certainly feels hopeless at that point.
One of my favorite shots in that rather crappy "Clone Wars" animated movie is when the clones are attacking the ridiculously sized mesas on some purplish planet and the camera was inside the troop transport and then - GoPro style - followed the clones out of the transport and through the brush leading up to the mesa.
It put you in the scene in a way that really helped you forget you were watching some ridiculous pew-pew movie.
I hope that Rogue One has a few shots like that.

I just saw the trailer, read over some replies....I don't really care how thin Mon Mothmas chain is in relation to the one on Jedi, having a female lead doesn't bother me. I'm sure I'll see this film when it releases. But oh my God, that line...."This is a Rebellion isn't it?......I Rebel" followed by that, Oh she's such a badass and so clever smirk that Mothma gives......uuuugggghhhhhh, cringe.....eyeroll.....I really hope that was a bit of trailer only dialog and not in the actual film. That was just way to forced sounding.

Could be... Rogue One already copied the bit about having radio chatter during a battle playing as the audio over a title.

That's funny, because I actually liked it. It felt very appropriate to me, and Mothma's reaction was great.

It was just my opinion, it felt cheesy to me, but that's only my opinion. I'm not looking down on anyone who saw that as enjoyable. Hell, for all I know the line could actually work when we see the full scene in the film.

Yeah I agree that bit of dialogue seemed forced. About Mon Mothmas chain I really am not concerned. I just brought it up as a curiosity. Even with the scaling issues(Which I know isn't a problem with most here) I feel that the trailer was excellent and it has me more excited then TFA. So its done its job for me. RO will hold me over quite well until Ep VIII is released. :techman:

It would have been fun to see a star wars film in nice may weather though.:)

Context does make a big difference and no worries on it. It worked for me, mostly because of Mon Mothma's reaction. I, thus far, have not be overly impressed with Felicity Jones' character.

And again, my personal reaction to the AT-AT's indicate that a lot of people will get various mileage out of this brief trailer.

There was a certain "rogue filmmaking" aspect to the original trilogy that I feel isn't quite there with TFA and the brief snippets of Rogue One that we've seen... a charming kind of roughness, I would say. It's like there's just a bit too much polish, or something. Does anyone else feel this way?

Kor

Yeah a bit. While I like the look of the film and it harkens back to ANH it does seem to be a bit shiny for my taste. Maybe we need some grain in the film. But I am still really excited to see it.

Yeah the movie definitely seems to be missing the dingy 70s lighting and look of ANH. I can understand why they'd want the movie to look a bit more modern than that, but it still might have been fun to see it filmed as if it really was made by Lucas in the 70s.

I think they could get away with that if this was a smaller, indie kind of thing, but there is no way Disney would let one of their big blockbusters look like it was filmed 40 years ago.

Probably because the point of Star Wars, from a film making perspective, was to push the boundaries of film making. Use older concepts and make them look new. Not take an existing technology and make it look like an old movie.

Lucas pushed in every film, at least with the technology he could get his hands on. While these new films might not push as much as Lucas might have pushed, it keeps his setting more or less in place. No need to make the films look like they were filmed in 1977. They need to look like this film was filmed in the Star Wars Universe around the time of the Battle of Yavin regardless of the quality of the camera or film used.

To be fair, ESB also had a much sleeker and more polished style than ANH, so it's not like Rogue One is really being that inconsistent with the look of the OT.

And personally I'd much rather the new movies emulate the style of ESB over any other SW movie.

Correct. ESB got more money to film and the camera work was much better and had a nice shiny look. But it would have been nice to have that same 70ish camera feeling for a film that takes place just before ANH.

I noticed the X-Wing pilot flightsuits used in Rogue One seem to be reasonably accurate approximations of the ones used in the OT. To be honest, I wouldn't have minded if they made them look a bit more realistically like a flightsuit, like the ones in TFA. Yeah, I know, stupid and doesn't matter, but ever since I learned the purpose of a flightsuit, it always bothered me that the outfits worn by the X-Wing pilots didn't look like they were meant to keep blood flowing to the pilot's head. Yeah, I guess we could imagine it's some sort of advanced space age flightsuit, and indeed that's what I did for a while, but since seeing the more realistic ones used for TFA, I've really taken a shine to them and it actually disappoints me slightly that we're getting ones accurate to the OT for Rogue One, even if it is consistent with how the OT looked.

I don't think it would be possible to recreate the original SW movie feel simply because there are so many things that truly were independent in the filmmaking world. For starters, the only reason SW continued was Al Lad Jr. at Fox pushing for it. Budget shortcuts were taken where ever possible, and the whole thing was regarded as a "kids film" that wasn't to be taken seriously.

Now a days, a Star Wars film is taken seriously, like a regular film, so you'll lack that edge of "are we possibly going to pull this off" and more "How can we innovate something else?"

Well, the Rebels are supposed to be a little more rag-tag so the pressurized ones may not have happened until later. I think the A-Wing pilot ones look a little more realistic than the X-Wing ones as well. Also, I'll admit to being impressed by the recreation efforts of Rouge One in the Rebel base layout.

Also, there might be an underlayer to keep blood moving and protect the pilot, with the outer layer being more of a flame resistant/squad identity thing.

Or I could just be making it up ;)

I prefer accurate to the older films over accurate to real life. It is Star Wars after all. ;)

Yeah, in this instance I think I prefer faithfulness to the original film over revisionism.

That said, note that a terrestrial modern day fighter jet is going to have a different set of parameters regarding the sort of pressures and stresses a pilot will endure than a (fictional) space fighter. For one thing, g-forces are probably not as much of a concern. X-Wings appears to have artificial gravity--a bit odd for such a small craft, but there you go--and one assumes they have some form of inertial dampening. The kinds amount of delta-v those things seem to pull is far beyond what a real-world flight suit could possibly compensate for. That's not even including the horrendous acceleration and deceleration seen while entering and exiting hyperspace. Suit or no suit, that'd turn any pilot into an expanding sack of soggy meat-paste without some external counter-force.

Therefore I'd suggest that the primary function of those suits is as short-term space suits in the event they have to eject. Having just enough radiation shielding and thermal management to keep a pilot alive for a few hours until they're picked up.
That the ones in TFA look more substantial than those in ANH can be accounted for if one were to propose that the suits used by the Alliance are re-purposed civilian-grade flightsuits while the Resistance suits are actual Republic military surplus.

I'm not gonna judge this movie's dialogue after snippets(!!) of dialogue from a trailer. For all I know it's going to be completely different in the actual scene, where it's expanded and more clear.
