IIRC the network forced a show runner change in order to go onto a 3rd season.
And I agree with Mr. Jones re: his disgust that both Cap Irving and Jenny's roles were diminished in season 2 in order to bring on the unnecessary white guy as a former love of Jenny and future love for Abbie.

As a female, I saw the unnecessary Hawkins as a way to diminish Jenny and Abbie. After reading the above article I can understand how Beharie and Jones could have seen him as way to diminish Jenny, Abbie and Jones and hence a knock against their race.
I'll miss this show and what it could have been.
I have to admit I've enjoyed season 3 much more than 2 and I loved how Crane called forth the headless horseman to help defeat Pandora in the end.
