Variety said:
Marshall said the next “Jones” installment will not be a prequel but a continuation of the story from where it left off with “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” in 2008. Disney announced the new film last month, setting its release for July 19, 2019.

No folks, it's not April 1st.

Something that can be taken away from this is that Harrison Ford will not be replaced, and the story might simply happen after Crystal Skull with no attempt to "bookend" Harrison onto a prequel story.

There's no news in this story. All he's saying is that it will be a sequel, not a prequel, which the casting of Ford should make obvious. Hasn't this been clear since the film has been announced?

This is pretty much what I expected. Don't we already have an IJ5 thread?

Well, um, that's what I was expecting anyway so I guess I'm not in the 'shocked' camp.
Apparently there is a 'camp' that wanted a prequel? A film set before KotCS?
ToD set in 1935
Raiders set in 1936
Last Crusade in 1938
KotCS set in 1957

I'm all for finding out what 1960's era films they intend to honor and what setting they'll go for. Will the Soviet Communists still be the bad guys? What if the film is set in/around Vietnam? The Viet Cong could be the ones pursing Indy, at least in part, while some other treasure hunter competes with him?

I don't know if it's so much as wanted a prequel as people speculated that they might mix a 1950s/60s/70s story with Ford alongside a story with a younger actor playing a pre-Raiders Indiana. Thus paving the way for the young guy to take over for future sequels/prequels/in-betweenquels. The same approach is apparently being taken with the next Die Hard story.

^^ You wanted the movie, starring Harrison Ford, set before Crystal Skull?

Just because it's set after doesn't mean it's a continuation of the same plot.

I'm sure "Crystal Skull" was a learning experience as to what not to do for the next one, whatever time period the story may take place in. And George Lucas isn't involved, thank goodness.

Yeah. None of other movies were a direct continuation of the previous one, so I don't see why this one would be any different.

Are we and Indy to just forget about Marion Ravenwood?

Hopefully not. Karen Allen was one of the few highlights of Crystal Skull, although she spent most of her screen time just grinning like a fangirl, but it was charming. If they find a way to forget about Mutt, then they can give Marion a beefier role as a sidekick.

They could just recast him. Oh, and change that nickname while they're at it.

Not to mention they got married, which is a pretty big deal in terms of continuity. As for Mutt, all they really have to do is never mention him again.

It's not like Willie Scott or Short Round have been mentioned again.
Although I think bringing in an adult Short Round ala how Sallah showed back up in Last Crusade could be an interesting idea.

They should take these movies down a darker and edgier path and start the next movie with Mutt dying horribly at the hands of the villain. And then it's a revenge tale.
