They used sunglasses of a sort in Nemesis.
I Like the idea of having a communicator with a screen either as part of the tricorder or separate - badge communicators are very limited in functionality. There's no reason a more complete communicator couldn't be connected via 'bluetooth' to a comm-badge activator.
I also like the idea of personal force-fields in case there is a decompression. It'd be fairly simple to let people still get shot for drama by having a higher power phaser. I mean it works with stormtroopers.
Replace the radio bit with recorder (as in recording/downloading data) and you've got the standard tricorder.I've long been a fan of the idea of the tricorder being a 3-in-1 device (scanner/detector, portable computer (iPad or similar) and radio)...

Well a walkie talkie with an earpiece can do that, in fact the trunked airwave system used by the UK emergency services is superior to the comm badge in nearly everything except size. Group channels, point to point communication, private earpieces, an emergency button which gives you open channel and broadcasts your location. A modern sci fi take on comms needs updating from the 80s idea.I'd imagine something like "conference calling" via earpieces to avoid "unfriendlies" hearing both sides of the calls,
In "Guardian of Forever," Spock used his tricorder to record data from the Guardian. In "That Which Survives," a tricorder was used to transmit a distress signal (a SOS is a basic form of transmitted communication). In "Contagion," a tricorder was destroyed because it had downloaded dangerous information. No wires in any of the occasions.Maybe, although IFAIK, tricorders aren't usually shown as having wireless data transmit/receive capacity...
I don't remember that. They used sunglasses of a sort in Nemesis.
You don't see any other practical applications of armor?Scanning the thread, I'm a bit bemused by the apparent fondness for armoured uniforms. How useful is armour, really, in a setting where any serious opposition you come up against has weapons that straight-up vaporize you? I can see maybe using armour in specific situations where you're expecting to come up against arrows or gunfire, but apart from that...
Dune buggy sceneI don't remember that.![]()
Except this is also a setting with all kinds of force fields available, including personal force fields, so I can't see why they wouldn't just go that route instead. Basically you'd need an extreme situation where force fields were non-functional Because Plot.
Sure, but how likely is that in practice*? Guns can misfire, but that doesn't mean SWAT teams carry broadswords around just in case.Force fields can fail or be disabled.
Which is what happened to the transporter almost every show, so I don't see that as any different here.Explosions and shrapnel, sure, I guess?
