Tatooine, Jakku, Tatooine, Jakku... easy to blend them together given how interlinked and mirrored ANH and TFA are.

Obi Wan, and more specifically Ewan's protrayal of him in II and III are (barring some fine music, world design and the occasional action sequence) is the main redeeming feature of those films for me. I'll watch Ewan in pretty much anything, and of course I would end up watching a trilogy of films about him playing Obi Wan, yet... they need to think larger, outside of the box. These films have the opportunity, like The Clone Wars expertly hit home, to play with everything in this universe and enrich it. You could use Obi Wan to explore that universe, but why be beholden to the old characters when you can create compelling, fun new ones - like they did Rey and Finn. And neither of them need to be sewn so tightly into the mythos that each of them is connected to people from previous films.

Still, just to clarify - very strong Teaser with the right look and feel to it.

Hugo - seriously, the SW side of the brain is not engaged today
Even if the movies are based around a preexisting character like Obi-Wan, there's a pretty good chance they will be surrounded by "compelling, fun" new characters. It makes sense to use a fan favorite character to draw people into new characters' stories. It's also worth keeping in mind that as far as we know Rogue One only has one preexisting character, and she appears to be playing supporting role.
3/5.

Not bad, but like TFA just blatant pandering. Also, the "docucam" look needs to go. This is supposed to be a fantasy fairy tale.
The main saga movies are fantasy fairy tales, Rogue One is supposed to be a gritty war/heist movie.
Io9 has their analysis up, and they do say that that is Genvieve O'Reilly, who played Mon Mothma in scenes deleted from Revenge of the Sith, back as Mon Mothma. So it looks like we have our first kind of returning cast member from the prequels now.

I loved it, and instantly prefer it to the trailers for TFA. Despite the obvious cameo coming for Vader (which will no doubt feature the only lightsaber scene in the movie where he probably decapitates one of the rebels), I'm glad we're finally getting a Star Wars movie that steers away from the Skywalker clan. The shot of the Emperor's guards does imply there's another cameo that might show up too...

LOVED seeing the ANH Star Destroyer and not the TESB/ROTJ version (you can tell by the structure on top of the bridge).

My only gripe is I'm not a fan of prequels, and we already know they succeed in getting the Death Star plans, so some of the tension is already lost. They'd have to build the story around keeping your favourite characters alive, and most movies these days don't do that very well.

I'm hoping for a truly original Star Wars movie at some stage, which doesn't tie into the main seven or serve as a prequel in some way. Probably too much to hope for now that Di$ney are in charge.

James Earl Jones was confirmed as a voice artiste late last year, and judging by the shot of Emperor's guards, Ian McDermid will likely show up too.

Oh and sending prisoners on a suicide mission against the empire? They're actually doing the Dirty Dozen in space? In that case I expect to see this show up at some stage!

Is that the LIberator or the other DSV built by the Altas?

Just because we know the outcome doesn't mean the journey cannot be interesting and thrilling. (See: Just about every documentary ever made. (In particular: Apollo 13 and most documentaries centered around WWII.) Sometimes the thrill isn't in the destination but in the journey.

I guess, it baffles me. I think calling Rey a "Mary Sue" was a touch strong as there's clearly supposed to be more to her character's history than we are told in the movie so it's not like she's the "perfect and knows everything female character" a Mary Sue is supposed to be; the story needs to flesh out in order to see her entire journey.

I'm fine with seeing more and more female leads in strong roles, we need more of this considering how women are often treated in movies; in particular action movies. As I said, we had Padme and Leia in the PT and the OT but in those movies they were mostly plot devices or objects to be rescued; hardly fully realized characters like Rey and the RO female character will be.

Bring it on, as I'm tired of always seeing *male* dominated movies.

Agreed. Not to mention that so far Rey and Jyn strike me as very different characters, with Jyn having a much harder edge and being more of a troublemaker and delinquent.

It's just bizarre to me this fixation some scifi/superhero fans have on gender and race, where they perceive every casting that doesn't involve a white male as being motivated only by "political correctness".

I wonder if the Imperial guy in the white uniform (Ben Mendelsohn, presumably) is a Grand Admiral. If so, maybe possibly some day Thrawn can appear in the movies.

And I notice we didn't see Mads Mikkelsen's face. I think he might be that mysterious character in the black cloak and hood.

Another example being the recent OJ Simpson miniseries. We obviously know the result of that trial, but that didn't stop it from still being incredibly gripping and fascinating to watch what happened behind the scenes.

And of course with this story, we know even less of what happened and how exactly the rebels got ahold of those plans.

At least Lucas isn't involved; otherwise the movie will end with someone physically handing the plans to Princess Leia and her talking off the in the Tantive IV, pursued by a Star Destroyer...

One of the things that tickled me was seeing the original rebel troop uniforms and helmets, like those poor guys who got mauled down at he beginning of ANH.

While we're discussing new planets, a small part of me wonders how cool it would be if, despite this being in a galaxy far far away, that one of the planets our heroes land on and battle on is Earth... And what a mind blow if, even though this was a long time ago, it was actually our future...

And I haven't even had anything to drink today!

We know that they're successful in transmitting or passing along the stolen Death Star plans to Princess Leia, but we have no idea about what happens to these characters before or immediately after they do that, and therein lies the tension. Given that the team consists of a bunch of previously unseen characters (unless epic pornstache guy is really supposed to be Biggs, in which case he at least survives to ANH), their fates are entirely up in the air and no one is safe.

I do wonder, if standalone movies like one prove to be hugely popular, if Disney might decide to follow them up with a sequel of their own.

If Felicity Jones's character survives this, it would definitely be interesting to see her adventures later on in the Rebellion, say after ANH. Or maybe jump a bit further ahead to after ROTJ.

Disney's going to be churning these movies out for awhile, so I have to think it's something they're considering...
