Do you think LGBT characters will feature more prominently?

Jadzia being bi
Thing is, there no indication that Jadzia's sexual orientation is bisexuality.

She was operating off a residual memory of a long ago heterosexual relationship, if Kahn's (Kahn?) symbiote hadn't been from that former relationship, I don't think Jadzia would have felt any attraction for her.

I disagree. We already saw in TNG how this thing thing plays out with a heterosexual character.

I don't understand why people try to project homosexuality onto characters in Trek. Why not just do what the rest of us do and critcise the show for its utterly shit representations of homosexuality?

LGBT representation in Star Trek has indeed been shit. I don't think anyone disagrees with that overall point. I just don't see what is to be gained by panning one of the few good episodes on the subject and making excuses why Jadzia wasn't 'really' bi. 'Rejoined' is not a problem, the problem is that they completely dropped the ball after that and didn't have any (even vaguely) LGBT characters in the later series.

The episode gets "panned" owing to it being a half assed effort, and as a member of the LGBT community I'll give TPTB no credit for the lame way they hesitantly dipped their toe in the water.

Well it gets 'panned' because it wasn't a good episode on the subject. That's the point. It isn't us making excuses why Jadzia wasn't bi, it was the writers. As @T'Girl says, the writers tried to have their cake and eat it, and that was a little cowardly. If there were clear examples where Jadzia was shown to be bisexual elsewhere, they might have saved it. If the original pairing of previous hosts had been same sex too, they'd have definitely saved it. But as it is, the episode deals with the subject in a way that really just reinforces the idea that homosexuality is a deviation from the 'correct' male/female pairing. It remains that we have yet to see an unambiguously LGBT character on Star Trek, and more Outcasts and Rejoineds won't make the grade.

Fuller is openly gay, and I've loved everything he's done, so I expect the quality is going to be great.
He's only had minor supporting LGBT characters, but then he should have more freedom by not being on a network, and there's less pressure in general to keep gays off tv. I'll be surprised if we don't get a gay character in at least one episode, and I'll be disappointed if we don't get a regular cast member.
In related news JJ is talking vaguely about gays in Star Wars, which is really annoying me, because he had two movies to have a gay character in Trek and didn't do jack besides talk about it in interviews.

In JJ's defence (okay, it felt really weird to type that) in Trek he kinda had to work with already established characters* (and there weren't much time for minor characters), in Wars he got to create new characters. (I really hope that Finn and Poe end up together. I'm really disappointed if they don't.)

* Not that I would have minded had he made one of the established characters gay. That would have been a positive character change, unlike most of the stuff he did.

If he found time for the creepy Alice Eve underwear scene he could've worked a gay character in there somewhere.
Even something such as Sulu mentioning offhandedly that he was sad he was going to miss his two moms anniversary party or something.

They couldn't have blue nacelles without freaking out a decent portion of the hardcore fanbase. This forum would explode because Roddenberry drunkenly wrote Mr. and Mrs. Sulu on a cocktail napkin in 1972 and that should be considered canon.

Remember Mickey from Doctor Who in Into Darkness? He could just as easily have had a husband rather than a wife. I realize there wasn't much opprotunity to do much with the main cast even if they wanted to, but with a completely new character like that there were possibilities for LGBT diversity, they just chose not to do it.

Going forward, and probably for the last thirty years, they need to be thinking about it. We're hopefully moving towards a more open and diverse society, and Star Trek is beginning to look like a relic.
Except for the two new films, it looks very much like a relic, and that includes Enterprise.

I'd love to have some Admiral show up and its some wacky jellyfish looking creature, then have Kirk treat it like his childhood hero. Admiral X'zzzzzrt saved the most lives in the captain's chair in Federation history and was beloved by every crew that served under it. Basically the Chesty Puller of Starfleet.

2049 reboot Captain Uhura and her wife and XO Lt Cmdr Janice Rand of the USS Enterprise enter the bridge...
Or her husband Lt Cmdr Hikaru Sulu enter the bridge...
Cos we know Hollywood loves making nonwhite 'ethnic minorities' the main love interest...
(Some folks are still upset Uhura is having sex with Spock.)
