Do you think LGBT characters will feature more prominently?

Sexuality is complicated. Years ago an NPR program called The DNA Files discussed it, and some researchers think orientation isn't as simple as a single gene, but a whole bunch of genes whose expression results in that spectrum (not merely a false gay or straight binary) which determines attraction. It might be related to a combination of genes which might also influence which colors and sounds and smells and tastes an individual is genetically predisposed to respond to.

No doubt it's messy. I have a kick ass immune system, but also the psoriasis that goes with it.

The philosophical speculation is that upon attaining greater knowledge of genetics and acquiring the ability to engineer, alter, and repair genes and genomes, and what have you, parents will make choices concerning the genetic makeup of their children. When you can do something, it gets done by someone.

As far as the show goes, it would be odd if they did not include LGBT characters.

im all for genetic engineering
although choosing gender might screw our whole society
look what happened in china

as or the main topic ,I still think they'll screw us over and end up with a queer minor background character at most
rather than a main cast member.
or perhaps a weird alien who gayness is part of his biology so people wont react badley to the character(like the outcast cop out ep)

A future without redheads is the hopeful future that mankind has always dreamed of. They were the root of all our troubles and hostilities. With them gone, we shall finally know peace.
So, no Beverly Crusher, Kira Nerys, or Kathryn Janeway then?

Who would react badly to it? Most shows have a gay character now and there are a number of shows with a trans character. Do you think that scifi fans are so bigoted that they can't handle it? If so, it's even more important that they are a major character.

The Mom groups, and hate groups patrol all TV, even stuff their kids & homophobic allies will never watch, just so they have something new to protest about, because if they have nothing to protest about, then they are irrelevant and their millions of due paying members, will stop paying their dues.

Hate is like a shark.

They would have been upset about Uhura and Sulu too back in the 1960s. We know that a bunch of affiliates in the American south refused to air the kiss between Kirk and Uhura because it might upset their audience. Given how for a lot of people already find these parent's groups laughable, it might be the best promotion the show can get.

But really the biggest reason it needs to happen is that there are a bunch of LGBT kids out there and there aren't really that many positive role models on shows like Star Trek. Even more so with Trek because it does mean something. It could show a future where people like them are no longer hated and denied rights, but considered an equal and important part of humanity. It's not protecting children by hiding this from them, it's actually harming them.

Racial & gender issues in need of role models kick in early, but not a lot of 5 year olds are wrestling with their orientation. By the time a teen needs help figuring this out, who they want to get down with, they're (hopefully) too smart to be manipulated by hokey television shows made for 10 year olds to sell action figures.

I know when I was growing up in the 80s in an extremely sheltered small town in Tennessee I didn't have any gay role models, and it made life harder for me. I was so sheltered I barely knew what gay people were. Role models for gay kids are important. LGBT people are pretty much one of the few minorities not only usually not born into a family that shares their minority status, but are often born into a family hostile to them because of their minority status.
LGBT people should be included because we're part of life, and to continue to exclude us makes a mockery of the values that Trek espouses of diversity.

Not at 5, but most of us because actual fans around 10 to early teens. By then you have a pretty good idea of who you are. I really think its important that people get to see someone like them on screen. The default is white and straight and that does have an effect on everyone. That's why we think it's normal to be straight instead of just more common. I think that to some degree the original series made a difference by having Uhura and Sulu as important members of the crew and we know it inspired people. Hell I think that Janeway made a difference by having a female captain and she was always treated with the same respect as any other captain.

to be honest i don't have your faith in people.
there are still an absolute boat load of ignorant hate mongers out there looking for there chance to get upset and cause a fuss for there own nasty agenda
a network might cave in and not want the controversy.
and star trek is a notoriously heteronormative show

You're right about Trek being a heteronormative show, but the last time Trek was on the air (not talking about the movies) was 11 years ago. The TV landscape has changed significantly since then. Yeah there is still a lot of bigotry in the world, but I think the TV environment is much more friendly to LGBQT people than ever before. Plus with Bryan Fuller in charge, I have a good feeling it will be much more inclusive.

Most of the time that networks worry about controversy is because they depend on advertisers for money. Those companies hate controversy because they don't want to deal with it, although even they are starting to appeal to wider demographics. This is going to be on a streaming service, it only has to worry about keeping enough subscribers to justify producing the show. Both Netflix and Amazon have already produced shows with LGBT people and have been critically acclaimed and are extremely popular with audiences. Even Doctor Who which is made to appeal to families has Captain Jack who is portrayed as pansexual on the show, he became one of the most popular companions on the show and got a spin-off. There was probably a controversy from a tiny fraction of the audience, but its drowned out by the support from the majority of fans.

You can't produce a show just to appeal to people who hate it. Especially with Star Trek when people hating the show for having diversity are going against one of the major messages of the show. Should the show stop promoting the idea that eventually humanity will be united in peace with each other and with other species? There are plenty of people who hate this idea.

Less than a million people a week were watching Enterprise when it was cancelled.

Rumour has it that the persons who complain about this stuff can't or don't want to afford netflix/cable, which is where I was told that this new series is going to be airing.

Which means that they are sidestepping the FCC.

If there's no FCC, that means that metaphors are not necessary.

The third episode can just be two guys ####ing for 52 minutes.

"Sigh"

And then suddenly you have to be 18 to watch Star Trek.

^ I wouldn't say so, straight men have had plenty of heterosexual women to look at, and whilst the likes of Trip may have satisfied the desire to ogle handsome men, you do so knowing the character wouldn't return your interest.

The comics or a book
As a gay guy all I ask of a potential gay character is that they be male and attractive. Am I selfish/shallow?

The dream is that there is a never ending supply of LGBT characters that are not in the story as tokens because of their sexual orientation.

50 years later, notice how blacks and women can now be on TV without someone saying "You're welcome."

Earlier tonight on Supernatural, there's a woman who's house is being haunted and her daughter is being possessed. A line in the middle of all that was "My wife is out of town" and it didn't change a damn thing about how this mother cared for her daughter or how this person was haunted on by a Ghost.

maybe they'll do what they did with voyager's captain
have the (gay) significant other very far away on earth.
that way they have an excuse for no icky kissing and and an excuse for them not to get with anyone on the voyage.
monogamy used as a weapon against us
