Spoilers Supergirl - Season 1

The Kryptonian's ability to absorb and store solar power might be their primary source of energy. they don't need to eat because they get everything they need from the sun. Krypton's dull red star provides them with enough energy for basic Earth-ish human performance. But under the more energetic "yellow' sun of Earth their vast superpowers are triggered. They retain their (still functional but largely unnecessary) digestive system as a vestige of their past lives.

They don't NEED to eat but they can and do, mainly for taste.

Yup, I believe so.

TV always seems to go for red kryptonite changing the hero's personality, while the comics tended to go for wilder transformations:

Some of the documented effects from this era include:
  • Mental telepathy.
  • Uncontrollable hair and nail growth.
  • Transformation into a Kryptonian monster known as Drang.
  • Temporary insanity.
  • It was swallowed by the Kryptonian Flame-Dragon but caused no effects on the Flame-Dragon or Superman. (Superman #142)
  • It created a good and evil Superboy. (Adventure Comics #255)
  • It turned Superboy's figure into three different forms: fat, tiny and giant. (Adventure Comics #270)
  • It turned Superboy into three odd characters: a lion boy, a human magnet and Jesse James. (Superboy #103)
  • It made Superboy reveal his secret identity. (Superboy #107)
  • It paralyzed Superboy. (Superboy #85)
  • It caused Superboy to grow an extra finger on each hand. (Superboy #105)
  • It caused Superboy speechlessness. (Adventure Comics #307)
  • It caused Superboy amnesia. (Adventure Comics #268 & #284)
  • It restored Superboy's power after being under the effects of a Red Sun. (Superboy #81)

Not to mention these other weird transformations, including turning superpowered on one side of his body and normal on the other, gaining the equivalent powers of Ant-Man and Plastic Man, becoming a giant, and splitting into Clark and Superman.

This seems more reminiscent of its use in Smallville, where it consistently made Clark uninhibited and amoral, or in its first Lois & Clark appearance, where it just made him generally apathetic and lazy (although it had different effects later in the series). Although it seems like it's going farther than that here, making Supergirl downright evil. (It's also reminiscent of the fake Kryptonite in Superman III, which also made Superman uncaring and selfish and eventually split him in two, or else gave him a really vivid hallucination of splitting in two, or something.)

Probably, though since there's no allusion to the color red in the title, it might actually be black or even periwinkle (yes, that really is one of the variants) kryptonite or something else entirely. Honestly I don't see why red or any of the other colors would cause her to change outfits, so it might just be some kind of magic or mind control effect in play, too.
 
A new Supergirl statue that comes with Streaky the Supercat, and a mention up thread of Supergirl making out with her horse got me wondering, do you think there's any chance we might see some of the Superpets on SG eventually?
I don't really see where they would be any crazier than stuff we've already gotten, and they've been a pretty big part of the Superman mythos for a while now, especially Krypto.

As silly as they are, I always did love reading those red kryptonite stories as a kid and seeing the different ways Superman would have to adapt to his crazy new powers or appearance. :D

I kinda doubt it. Even if the writers wanted to, creating a convincing superpowered CG cat or horse would probably be too expensive to pull off. And there wouldn't be much storytelling potential in the idea anyway.

According to the DVR description of the episode, it's red kryptonite.
 
Bad girl is best girl! I can see it now, Maxwell Lord will totally be, I told you so! I wonder if Red K Supergirl would try to hook up with Lord?

Maxwell has a camera, or cameras in Kara's apartment.

A less appropriate spy would watch and rewatch Supergirl changing clothes, peeing and bathing.
