Ghostbusters 2016: Talk about the movie(s).

I like the new uniforms. Same goes for new proton packs and ECTO-1. They look good. I don't like the new ghost trap though.

1. Wiig's wand is holstered.

It's hard to see, but look again. Everyone is looking at McKinnon's face, but pay close attention to Wiig's hands, right when she's started. The wand is not holstered. This is the difference between the original and the new ghostbusters. A team of unprofessional, fish out of water, out of their element, but still doing their jobs versus this.

I figured the cast was females of the originals.
There are 3 white scientists and a regular person, who happens to be black, in the original films, so the new film will have the same. Just gender swapped.

I read somewhere, a long time ago, that they wanted Eddie Murphy to be the 4th ghostbuster. They wrote character to be a role Murphy plays well. When he couldn't be in it, they reduced Winston's role in the film.

I admit I did not think 'inappropriate wand handling' would be used as a criticism of this trailer but given the apparent environment around the film I expect it to be accused of kidnapping the Lindbergh baby at any point now.

Which, again, proves nothing. There's never a shortage of people on the Internet complaining about things. Reboots in particular tend to meet with a lot of skepticism. Once they come out, if they're actually good, then people forget all their complaints.
If only that were the case even most of the time. (Hint: It isn't.)

I'm kind of amused that you think your inflated opinions are somehow superior to everyone else's, and when it differs, it's not because your opinion may be faulty, but because everyone else's is. They have a word for that sort of mentality, you know...

This might be a case of 'everyone I know hates it' where the movie still does great box office.

Much like the fan-angst against Abrams-Trek the simple fact is most of the audience has no idea about these problems and in the end financially they don't really matter anyway.

I try to re-watch Ghostbusters every Halloween. I'm looking forward to making it a double header with this movie. Unless of course, the internet is right and the release of the new movie will somehow melt my blu-ray of the original ;). Even if the new movie is bad I don't see how it hurts what came before. No one talks much about Madonna's terrible take on 'American Pie' anymore.

Kate McKinnon kept me watching SNL for a while longer than I would have otherwise. I will see the movie just for her.

At this point, I can't differentiate between the dislikes based on actual valid criticisms and those that are just hating on it just because of [insert shallow reasons here].

I'll probably go see it, likely with my daughter, who (like me) loves the original. The trailer caught my attention, and it looks interesting. But *just* based on the trailer, I honestly can't tell if it'll be good or lousy, but I'm leaning towards the "good" side right now.

No, I think the difference is that you've actually seen the entire original movie and are qualified to judge it, whereas you've only seen a couple of out-of-context fragments of the new one and are filling in the rest with pure speculation and assumptions.

Even just from the trailer, it's obvious that this is not the case. I felt they all had distinct personalities that couldn't map one-on-one with any of the original team. Patty may be a black civilian, but that's where her similarities to Winston end; she's evidently a louder, zanier character than Winston, who was essentially the straight man. Jillian Holtzmann, as I've remarked, seems to combine Peter's snarky attitude with Ray's enthusiasm (and cartoon Egon's hairstyling sensibilities), and it seems to me that she's bringing a comic sexiness to the role that none of the original foursome had (as far as I could tell), like in the bit where she licks her proton gun. Wiig's character (I don't recall her name) seems kind of quiet and understated from what I can tell, and McCarthy's seems to be pretty focused and idealistic, the one pushing the others to form a team. I don't see any one-to-one correspondences except on the most superficial level.

No, it proves that people have a problem with the trailer. I'm not sure what else you expect people expressing disapproval of something to prove.

Define "people." There are over 7 billion human beings on this planet. Any group of two or more of them constitutes "people." So saying "people have a problem" means nothing if you can't specify what percentage of people they represent. There are always people who have a problem. It's foolish to expect anything to be universally loved. And there are countless examples of movies that were hated when the trailers came out but adored when the movies themselves came out. I seem to recall that "people" thought The Dark Knight would be a pretty terrible movie when they saw the trailers.

I'm personally of the opinion that Ghostbusters is not a film that should be remade. I know that is blasphemy in Hollywood, and I'm not saying the first was a perfect film by any stretch or that the actors were perfect (all three have been in some horrible films), but the first film did benefit from something this film will not - it was an original idea that gave us something we have never seen before.

Were there films about ghosts? Yeah. People who hunt ghosts? Yep. People who offer ghost hunting as an extermination service? No. That was a unique idea at the time was new and fresh. Now that people have grown up with the original film, not to mention decades of action/scifi comedies, it's hard to create something unique in that genre. Even Ghostbusters II, a film with the same cast as the first failed to impress simply because it was an idea that had been thoroughly explored in the first film, and the writers seemed to struggle to add anything fresh.

I'm not saying that excuses how horrid this trailer makes the film appear to be. Just that you can't bank on an idea that enticed people 30 years ago to do the same today.

Define "people."
Do I have to?

So saying "people have a problem" means nothing if you can't specify what percentage of people they represent.

I guess we will find out on July 15th, but when a film with a huge base of rabid fans fails to generate enough excitement to overcome criticism, I'd say that is a bad thing.

There are always people who have a problem.
I'm a therapist. It's called job security.
It's foolish to expect anything to be universally loved.
No, but again, if a film can't even get the rabid fanbase to drown out the criticism, it isn't a good sign.

And there are countless examples of movies that were hated when the trailers came out but adored when the movies themselves came out.
I can't think of a single one.
I seem to recall that "people" thought The Dark Knight would be a pretty terrible movie when they saw the trailers.

I seem to recall The Dark Knight having a huge amount of positive buzz before and after the trailer was released.

Well, that's actually not true. A story about a professional ghost-hunting service had been done before, by Filmation Associates in 1975, and it was called... wait for it... The Ghost Busters. Columbia actually had to pay Filmation a settlement for the right to use the title in their movie. (Yet Filmation retained their own rights to their property, which is why they were able to make their own competing Ghostbusters cartoon, and why the series based on the movie had to call itself The Real Ghostbusters.)

And before that, there was the 1946 Bowery Boys movie Spook Busters, about an exterminator business that was hired to get rid of ghosts. The working title for that film, incidentally, was Ghost Busters. There is nothing new under the sun...

I don't know about 'trailer' but the idea of a Heath Ledger Joker and Michael Keaton Batman were pretty much shit on at first thought.

As Christopher notes, Ghostbusters is definitely a property where you can't say "there was nothing like this before". There literally was a show with the same name and concept. Why do you think "The Real Ghostbusters" is named that way?

She has her wand out while looking for ghosts.

Did you watch the original at all? This lady probably didn't think they were doing a great job.

It's really sad how people are attacking this movie based on a single trailer.

Odd, I find it even more sad how people are attacking other people for having a different opinion based solely upon the information released about it, as if their opinion is somehow superior to anyone else's.

You're right, my mistake. I see it pop up a little when she sees McKinnon.

Still, as Awesome pointed out, it's not as though the original guys were particularly safety-conscious when it came to their unlicensed nuclear accelerators. :)

My opinion is backed up by examples from the original of what others are complaining about in the remake. Plus none of us have even seen the movie yet. So saying that its terrible based on short clips is rather shortsighted. It could be the comedic masterpiece we've all been waiting for.

They never even tested them before turning them on for the first time. There's a great gag where Egon turns on Ray's pack and slowly tries to get as far away from it as possible, while still in the elevator.

Or it might not be. Why is your opinion so much better than anyone else's?

Also, since you brought it up, I'm still waiting for an example from the original movie where Winston acted anything like Leslie Jones' character in the trailer.

Because my opinion is, wait and see. Yours is that it sucks based on 90 seconds of footage. Since you can foresee the future, can you give me any investment tips?

He never slapped anyone in the movies. You have me there, this comedy is going to suck because comedic things happen in it.
