I think it's the first time we've seen a city in the Middle East get destroyed in a movie. Dubai really got squashed. That was the Burj Kalif being dropped on the ground.

At least they're spreading things around more this time.

I want to like this, but the first one is such lightning in the bottle that I don't know if they can pull it off again. ID4 has just the right mixture stupid, fun, and pew pew explosions that will be difficult to replicate. Then again: Jeff Goldblum is back. That might trump my doubt.

I love that they were singing the national anthem and then aliens come smack everyone in the middle of that.

It looked like it. But if looked like it was dropped in the Thames.

It was. The giant mothership initially sucks everything up off the ground in a huge vortex (you can see this during the Singapore attack where the buildings and freeway get pulled up toward the ship) and then bits and pieces of debris gradually come falling back down as it's hovering over other cities like London. Hence Goldblum's cheesy-fun "What goes up, must come down" line. Only due to the enormity of it all 'pieces of debris" include the world's tallest building, a jumbo jet, and a natural gas tanker.

    They ripped off Doctor Who

The Judoon did this in an episode taking a whole hospital to the Moon and dropping it back on Earth, but they managed to put it back on Earth and all the pipes and fittings magically restored.

Goldblum is movie helper. You could put him in an Asylum film and it would instantly become watchable.

As for this, I'm excited as hell. ID4 was the first blockbuster I remember getting excited about and got to see in theaters. It's dumb as hell, but I adore every moment.

Hell, if Pullman's character was a real person and running for president this year, I'd vote for him.

They're going to have to. I mean, didn't they destroy most of the major cities in the first ID4? 20 years and alien tech means they've rebuilt the cities, sure, but the main buildings (Empire State, Sears Tower) are probably still gone, and replaced by something completely different. Except for the White House. Americans have a tendency to rebuild the White House everytime it's completely destroyed.

Movie presidents are always* awesome, and always+ far better than the real life choices.

    * OK, some are terrible, like the one in "Mars Attacks"
+ This is true, even the Mars Attacks president is better than the current candidates. The one in Idiocracy is positively awesome in comparison.

Personally, I am a fan of Frank Underwood (although he's not technically a "movie" president).

    Well... There was:
    Deep Impact
    2012
Day After Tomorrow (implied? Maybe just iced over?)
    ID4
White House Down - sustained heavy damage (or was it Olympus has Fallen?)

    What others am I missing?

But in real life, we tend to keep rebuilding it as well.. It was practically destroyed in the War of 1812.. And then it was rebuilt in the 1950 because it was simply falling apart.

It does bug me that after all the major cities that were destroyed in the first one that people are stupid enough to live in huge towers again. I'd live on a farm in the middle of no where.

If people in movies were that smart then these kind of movies, and especially their sequels, wouldn't exist.

We rebuilt the World Trade Center after 9/11, we rebuilt cities after wars or natural disasters. It's something in human nature where if something wipes out our spot, we have a strong urge to rebuild in that spot possibly out of spite.

Look at London, for example. We keep rebuilding our homes, hoping that the new version is better and stronger.
