Your dream Thirteenth Doctor

Joe Washington

Fleet Captain
Fleet Captain
Peter Capaldi says that Season 10 could be his last. If that happens, what would you want the Thirteenth Doctor to be like?

As long at it is the Doctor we should be fine in Series 11.

Likely the new Doctor will be younger, but that is only relative to Capaldi's age.
A woman? Maybe. One of the other Doctor's returning to the role as the 13th Doctor (revisiting some old favorites).
Will they have a 13th Doctor for long, or skip to the 14th Doctor?

Simon Baker or Chiwetel Ejiofor.
Posh, smartly dressed in a sort of old gentleman's hunting get-up. A bit old fashioned, visibly restrained but explosively enthusiastic. Full of swagger but a bit too self-conscious to relish in it.

^ I would LOVE that. Sid would be awesome.

Patterson Joseph, Jason Isaacs, James Nesbitt, Craig Ferguson, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Colin Morgan, Domhnall Gleeson, Adian Turner, Kevin Ryan, Mathew Macfadyen....those are the first names to come to mind.

He was my choice for Doctor 12. He's my choice for Doctor 13, and will remain my preferred choice until he becomes too old or the show ends.
I would also love Alexander Siddig as The Doctor. He's been my choice since Christopher Eccleston left. And we know he enjoys Doctor Who because he's recorded multiple Big Finish audio plays.

My only other choice, one who've I wanted since the show was announced to return, is Eddie Izzard.

I was about to come in here and say the same exact thing. He sounded like he was having quite a bit of fun in The Diary of River Song. However, his role as Doran Martell on Game of Thrones is a problem unless he's getting killed off thjis season. If I remember correctly, the GoT shooting schedule overlaps with a good portion of the usual DW schedule. On the other hand, as Doran is a pretty immobile character, they might be able to get away with him simply being in the studio and not on location.

Frankly, I'd love to see someone like Joanna Lumley, Arabella Weir, or Natalia Tena as the Doctor. I know the first two were originally pastiches of the role, but I think they'd be excellent in a more serious take on the character as well (bringing in parts of their original roles as well). Tena seems like she could play the role in a similar vein.

Lumley is almost 70. 15/20 years ago yes, but not now I'm afraid. I'm not sure I've seen Weir in much outside of sketch shows so can't really comment. She is close to 60 however which again would make her the oldest Doctor at time of casting. I like the idea of Tena however, never considered her before but I think she'd have the potential to be very good.

My dream 13th Doctor? If male Alexander Siddig (who I think could be easily recast by GoT given he hasn't had that much screentime) or Paterson Joseph. If female Nicola Walker or Olivia Colman.

Huh. I hadn't realized Lumley and Weir were that old. This is what I get for not checking IMDB. Tena would be much more reasonable, then, especially considering the physical demands of the role these days. (It would be interesting to see an older, female Doctor - they could write the role around that but, of course, they won't.)

Not a female. Don't want to sound like a stick in the mud, but a female doctor would not at all work. It'd be a gimmick and it's already sort of been used with Missy anyway, although I can just tell that's the production team testing the waters for a female doctor.

As for actual candidates, Damien Molony, Daniel Gillies, Nigel Havers and my mum's favourite candidate is Mackenzie Crook (watch Almost Human and you'll know why).

I absolutely fail to understand how casting a talented woman as the Doctor would be a gimmick. If she's got the acting chops for the role, by all means, let her at it! Each Doctor is different to some degree, but the core Doctorness, that sense of right and wrong, fighting evil, and saving the universe (with style) is always there. A female Doctor would just be another in that line of different Doctors - so long as she's doing what the Doctor has always done.

Natalie Dormer.
Oooh, she'd be good.

Quite right. The core essence of The Doctor (or The Master) is not gender based. As you said, as long as the actress is cast because she would be good in the role, and not for the sack of being a woman, then the casting is not a gimmick.
