I think Axanar is a wonderful project and had huge potential but... CBS is correct at this point.

Alec (and others I'm sure) went WAY over the line and broke the rules. I'm sure they won't end up paying CBS giant piles o' money but Axanar is dead.

I would have liked to have seen Axanar made -- but I refused to give the project money for this very reason. The arrogance here is pretty shocking.

Re: CBS, they are clearly in the right, but I don't exactly trust them to create a new Trek show that doesn't get canceled before it has a chance to get its feet.

The Axanar trailer, at the very least, felt like the Star Trek we all know and love.

Tangent:

Meh. It's going to be the flagship of their steaming platform. It's status as that as well as a low bar of success (as compared to it airing on the network) gives it a decent chance of succeeding.

Good points. And I love the optimism.

Has there been any insights as to the setting / characters / timeframe of the new series, yet? Or are we still waiting for all of that jazz?

Edit: I can definitely say that I'll be a new subscriber to CBS all access the second this airs, regardless of the cost.

I Stand With... the original length of copyright in law: 20 years, in which case Star Trek would be public domain. I *might* could see 30 years because life spans are longer than they were when the US was founded, but the duration has gotten completely absurd.

That said, I voted CBS, because what I've outlined above isn't the current legal reality, and under that current reality, CBS is 100% in the right, plus, I believe there's some other shady stuff going on behind the scenes with Axanar.

The poll is really "do you stand by U.S. Copyright law or find yourself above it?" So I guess I'll side with copyright. 'Dems the breaks.

I think the poll is a bit misleading. Because vote for Axanar is voting for a fanfilm Production. I stand with Star Trek Fan Films.

I tell people over and again again. Do not go blind into a fight supporting Axanar, with out asking all the facts from them.

Its a very sad history with Alec Peters on not just this forum but many. He has been ban on so many sites that its not funny.

When dealing with a FanFilm production you need to have Temperament and leadership to guid the production and also with someone copyright material. Alec does not have that. When you go after Tony Todd who was attached to you project, but has decided to leave.

Do not go one twitter and disrespect the man. Do not spit into CBS face, like they do not have the right to go after you. Some people may not like this, but CBS pay for Trek, they own it. Show them some respect when it comes to that.

Also, I hope this does not happen, but if this effects other fan production, I hope people remember who's fault it was.

I stand with Star Trek Fan Films, too - but in this case, I think the absolute best way to do that is to make it as clear as possible to CBS, as quickly as possible, that the Axanar people are NOT representative of the people making fan films as a group AT ALL, and that everyone else is happy playing by CBS's unwritten rules as they've stood up til this point.

Only parts of Trek would be in the public domain. Even if copyright only extended to 20 or 30 years after release (which is what I understood you to suggest) Axanar would still be in violation because they intended to use Robau from the 2009 movie and used Soval from Enterprise.

You understood correctly, and that is true enough. And my position on copyright has absolutely nothing to do with defending Axanar (or Trek specifically) - they're clearly in the wrong, regardless, and I'm suspicious that outright fraud and some sort of securities investigation may come into play before it is over with, in addition to copyright issues.

And all of the 2009 ship designs, bridges, uniforms, equipment etc
