I was once the most powerful crowdfund raiser in all of Starfleet...

Hang on, I'm just boning up on IP law...

Sam : So I heard you tried to screw with someone's IP
( pauses to look up several copyright laws )
Sam : Well, going by what I've read in these books
( pauses for dramatic effect )
Sam : To put it bluntly, You're screwed
( cut to ad about CBS's new streaming service & new Star Trek )

As far as copyright goes, the way I always understood it: Roddenberry never "owned" Star Trek, Desilu did. Then it went to Paramount, who offered to sell it to Roddenberry in the early-70's then to Viacom and CBS.

terrible news for SOME trek fans

Yes it is.

what trek fans it it not bad news for ?
you mean those fans who dont care and not real trek fans
It depends on one's perspective. Some people don't like Alec Peters, and consider him a bloviating gasbag (which at this point is kind of being proven by his reactions).

Some people felt that there were fan productions getting too big for their britches, and was concerned that it would ruin the whole thing for everyone.

These people probably don't find this news as terrible as, say, someone who had donated money to the project, but that doesn't mean they're "not real" fans. People really have to stop with this "real fans" and "not real fans" bullshit. If you like Star Trek, you're a fan. Done. End of.

I'm wondering why CBS is asking for a jury trial?

It's obvious to me that the Axanar group has pissed off the big boys in a big way, and maybe public humiliation on top of bankrupting Peters is the only thing that will make them smile again. Anyone who didn't see at least the possibility of this coming down the pike (ahem) is either disturbingly gullible or just hasn't been paying attention.

It makes me no difference either way. I wasn't that impressed with Prelude, and all the delays have had red alert sirens going off in my head for some time. Honestly, I never thought the feature would ever get made anyway, and this guarantees that it won't.

Personally, I think this whole thing has been a scam run by a 2nd class grifter with delusions of grandeur. Peters is no Bernie Madoff, but he damn sure tried to be.

GUH, I forgot, technically Viacom owned it all 'till they split the company up, then Star Trek itself was split between Paramount for the movies, and CBS for the TV series, same with merch rights as well, as far as I can tell.

Well, lots of us have been saying this very thing for some time... only to be shouted down by the Axanar-faithful for daring to suggest their darling project was anything but perfection.

Re-reading the original Axanar thread on this board has certainly been enlightening given the news of the past day or so, that's for sure.

It's annoying but probably lucrative for CBS.
It's bad news for the jury, unless they're interested in the case.
It's good news for the lawyers.

As far as any Star Trek fans go...

It's bad news for the Axanar team, though based on the twitter/facebook posts you would think this is the best thing that's happened to them in months.
It's upsetting news for people who donated.
It's sad news for fans of Prelude who were looking forward to Axanar (me included).
It's probably unnerving news for producers of other fan projects and fans of those projects.

That's a small fraction of Star Trek fans. Otherwise, it doesn't directly impact any other fans at all. I'm sure those fans are real though. I haven't pricked any of them, but I'm sure they bleed as well.

I think CBS owns it all and licenses rights to Paramount. Which is where they come in as Axanar was planning on using Robau and Abramsverse ship designs.

Paramount owns the Movie Catalogue... the question that I can't seem to find an answer to.. is, does paramount own rights to make movies, OR do they license that from CBS...

Regardless both are owned by National Amusements, which is, a privately held organization....
