If there are heterosexuals in the cast of characters, hopefully their sexualities will be a private thing and will remain in their quarters.

Because Kirk and Riker's sexuality was such a distraction?

I won't be happy unless it's a man wearing a tight pink leotard flouncing about the place giving fashion advice and making wildly flamboyant double-entendres. If he doesn't mince onto the bridge with a daiquiri in hand, shouting "set phasers to stunning, sweetie" I'll be deeply disappointed.
Question, how did you find out he was gay?See The Flash...the police captain is gay and is just treated as any other orientation or relationship...
We were "explicitly" informed that Riker was straight when we were told in a voice over (Deanna's thoughts) that he had a past relationship with another character who was female. No one ever had to explicitly say on the show, "Riker's straight" ...

IIRC the captain just mentioned his partner in passing. It was done very naturally and casually, in a blink and you miss it moment. The boyfriend later showed up in a minor role in a scene or two (now the fiancee having gotten engaged off screen) when the captain was hospitalized after being injured by a villain. Even the captain has been a very minor character. It's nice inclusion but he's barely a recurring character.Question, how did you find out he was gay?See The Flash...the police captain is gay and is just treated as any other orientation or relationship...

I'm really tired of people talking about the inclusion of gay characters as if they're expecting it to be camp and awkward, as if it were all but impossible for gay characters to be written with the same maturity and dignity as straight characters.
And anyways, it's not as if Trek hasn't done some awkward showboating of heterosexuality. A whole lot of the first season of TNG come to mind on that.
I am of the feeling that a somewhat bad LGBT character would be better than no such character at all. Don't get me wrong, we all want a good character who is a good fit with the other characters. If a gay character were to appear, people here want it done right, a badly done gay character, would, in many ways, be worse then not having a gay character present.
Or basically every romance ever...And anyways, it's not as if Trek hasn't done some awkward showboating of heterosexuality. A whole lot of the first season of TNG come to mind on that.
If that's all they do? Then yes.God should strike them all down if they make something "fun".
No.
I'd rather have simple fun than them twisting themselves in knots trying to show us how important Star Trek is.
Quite. TV has changed a lot since Star Trek went off the air. Currently the most prominent sci-fi show on the CW - the successor to UPN, where Voyager and Enterprise aired - has a bisexual lead, and the same can be said for two of Netflix's most successful series, House of Cards and Orange Is The New Black.I think though TV shows nowadays are better able to incorporate gay people into their shows.
The 100; the only one of the three sci-fi shows from the 13/14 season to survive.Which CW sci fi show has a bisexual lead?
