New Production Format

Star Trek fans tapered off a bit during Star Trek Enterprise because of bickering over things that were not even Star Trek cannon.

I think fans tapered off during ENT because it was a mediocre show that went nowhere, just continuing half-baked with the same tired old tropes that had already been done to death in the bloated Trek universe, not breaking any new ground.

In my estimation, Enterprise's greatest sin was to be produced last and in too close proximity to the end of DS9 and Voyager (and by too many of the same people) to be perceived as anything really new. I also have a difficult time really viewing it as too much of a failure, even though I know that as part of a larger and decades-spanning franchise more was expected of it, because it actually outlasted most of my other favorite shows from around that same era, including but not limited to Farscape, Firefly, Arrested Development, Pushing Daisies, The Middle Man, etc. None of which really found an audience in their day, and I'll be damned if I'll accept lack of quality as an explanation. TV can be a strange beast. Smarter people than me spend more time than I'd care to devote trying to find out what makes some shows popular and others not. I just watch what I like for as long as it lasts. Hopefully this new Trek series will be entertaining and popular enough to stick around for a while. :D

With VOY, I would say yes.
DS9 bears further discussion, though.

Well, the ratings started falling on week two and barely paused for seven years.

Quality in the ideal sense was not the main issue.

I'd argue that it wasn't quite that mediocre. Overall, I think it was a better show than Voyager, but that aint saying much.

Star Trek Enterprise brilliantly filled in gaps in Trek history and explained things like the Klingon cranial ridges missing in TOS.

In the real world it was simply the newness of the show (TOS) and the shoestring budget it was shot on that limited the show in many ways. But look how much they did with what they had!!!

ENT also explained they animosity between Vulcans and humans. And we gained greater insight on ENT into Vulcans Andorians etc etc etc.

IMHO the Xindi arc took too long and to follow that up with another time travel 2fer and involving Nazis (again) really slammed the lid on faithful viewers up to that point.

The episodes that immediately followed in season 4 were some of the best in Trek (and I do not say that lightly).

I don't think CBS reads these boards.

You might be surprised.
You might be disappointed.
Then why not make thread titles that reflect the subject instead of generic titles that sound like you're talking about the same thing in different threads?

I can't change the thread titles. Can you?

In other words, "any luck, Duck?"

Only a moderator can change thread titles. which is why you should put more thought into them when you create them.

Are you a moderator?

If not... why do you act like one?

And why haven't the mods said anything to me if they have the problem you seem to have?

Which was, in my opinion, completely unnecessary. We all know why TOS Klingons look different from TNG Klingons. Makeup budget. It was a completely accepted happenstance that viewers didn't really care about (and that DS9 even poked fun at), until some ENT writer all of a sudden felt that we needed a convoluted two-part episode to explain it in-universe. That's like the writers of Bewitched making a two-part episode about why Darrin all of a sudden looks completely different by coming up with some outer-space virus that turns Dick York into Dick Sargent. We all know the actor got replaced; there's no need to pull a reason out of our ass to justify it on screen.

ENT also explained they animosity between Vulcans and humans. And we gained greater insight on ENT into Vulcans Andorians etc etc etc.
While this may be true about the Andorians, there was really no great animosity between humans and Vulcans that needed explaining.

Yeah, there were a few good ones, but season 4 was mostly just a TOS/TNG fanwank slamfest after three mediocre seasons where the show really had no idea what it was supposed to be about.

Ideas are what I am offering.

It's a bad idea.

Oh?

Care to elaborate?

Or are you just a refugee from the Argument Clinic as well?

Besides the insane costs, multiple standing sets that would be used infrequently, cast of dozens, and the inability to generate a cohesive fanbase because you're essentially producing 5 different series all with their own tone at the same time?

Nah.

Bad idea.

Exactly so.

I suppose that the essential impracticality of the proposed format has been gone over so many times on this board - it's anything but original and new - that its flaws didn't seem to need elaboration.
