The First Trailer

sombreodown_zps5tpuiqc3.jpg

Goodbye Sombreroprise. :(

There was just something about the expression on the Shat bussard collector and being torn off the ship that struck me funny.

^^^ Much easier when they're just latching onto your hull than slamming through it like buckshot.
If Kirk would just reset his phasers to the inverse harmonic of the interferometric pulses that link the swarm together he'd be able to disrupt their ability to work as a group and save his ship. :techman:

Mulgrew could spew that babble out without missing a beat.

-Kirk likely brought the bike with him (5 years is a long time and Enterprise is a big ship). The trailer shows Kirk approaching the wreckage of the Enterprise, then leaving on a motorbike.
It doesn't show him leaving the WRECKAGE on a motorbike. I agree he COULD have brought it with him, but that's a motocross-style bike, it's not the kind of thing he is likely to even own. I could see it being Starfleet issue, but that's a puzzling design if so.

-The Beastie Boys song was used in ST09 and has an association with Kirk. No reason he wouldn't have it on his iPod (or NuPod).
But not a lot of reasons why he would be PLAYING it, IMO. it would be different if that scene took place on the Enterprise in his quarters, yes?

-I don't think Kirk is fighting Kraal on the Enterprise; that's just confusion caused by the style of the trailer.
Kraal is clearly ON the Enterprise, you can tell from the background in which he actually appears. It's just a question of WHEN?

I'm not saying anything definite, anyway, just placing an early bet.:techman:

Enterprise packin' bikes? It's plausible actually.

It just looks daft. Maybe Battlestar 1980 caused me some permanent damage. :scream:
Don't feel bad. I only saw four episodes and it took me YEARS to recover.

Sometimes people put music on while working, and Kirk very much seems like that type. It looks to me like they're trying to get the beaten-up old USS Franklin (or is it a shuttle?) operational at the time.

Ain't that the truth?

I was talking with a friend yesterday and he had a theory that the movie might be a riff on The Cage. Though Lin brought up the theme of imperialism, my friend interpreted Kraal's line as a member of a resistance against the Talosians.

There are some elements already reminiscent of The Cage, people being lured to a planet, downed Earth vessels, a mysterious woman that guides the captain, and my theory that the Enterprise's destruction isn't real, perhaps an illusion. He also guessed that the Enterprise's destruction was an illusion, and suggested that the motorbike and the city could be illusions as well. He also thought the new uniforms were closer to the Pike era threads.

The theme of resistance to imperialism doesn't quite fit "The Cage's" theme of resistance to imprisonment, but it would be quite a way to celebrate the 50th anniversary by having a story with thematic resonance to the very first Star Trek story.

So, um....

I saw a 3D screening of SWVII:TFA last night, and the Star Trek: Beyond trailer was not shown. I was looking forward to seeing it on the big screen. :(

Maybe it's only being played in front of 2D showings?

This was in the US, by the way.

My sister saw TFA last night and said they only showed the quick mid-air transporter grab clip from ST:Beyond in the previews instead of the full teaser, which is kind of a waste.

James T. Kirk was a twentieth century music hater, but that was another life.

No. This is not parallel universe alternate reality. 20th century music didn't even appear to be popular in the 22nd century. This is BSG v nuBSG version of Trek. Completely re-imagined. They need to chuck JJ's alternate reality BS out the airlock and that would end these debates.

20th century music didn't even appear to be popular in the 22nd century.

You totally missing the joke aside, your're basing that assertion that it wasn't popular because it didn't appear on screen.

Going by that same logic, the only music that was popular was what did appear on screen.

That limits 23rd musical styles to Spock playing his Vulcan harp and Uhura's Geriatrics Dance in TFF.

I haven't yet tracked down where I read it, but I do remember it being mentioned recently that the Trek trailer would be attached to 2D showings only. I'd guess that they weren't quite far enough along in the production process to have a 3D version ready for the first trailer.

EDIT:

I think these posts may be what I remembered reading.
