Spoilers STAR TREK BEYOND

I know they couldn't get Alice Eve to reprise her role as Carol for "Star Trek Beyond"
Was there ever any official word on this and why she's not back?
I think in an interview she just said they hadn't asked her.

I'm betting the upcoming movie has a throwaway line addressing this (Bob Orci's contribution!).

If you're going to include her it seems to me that you'd want to be able to devote a good chunk of screentime to her and Kirk to any follow up to STID.
Practically speaking, if Kirk is involved with Carol on an ongoing basis, this means he won't be able to teach alien females about this human thing called "love", which would of course mean the death of the franchise.

Nothing from Orci's draft has been retained. According to what Lin is saying in interviews, when he was hired, Abrams told him to start with a clean slate and make the movie his own way.

According to Lin, Star Trek Beyond originally included some references back to the previous film, Star Trek Into Darkness, exploring the impact of Khan’s attacks on the Federation. But the final version of the movie opts to ignore its predecessor, instead.

“We pick them up about two and a half years after the end of Into Darkness and there were iterations where we did explore [the impact of Khan],” Lin said. He revealed they shot a ton of stuff that won’t make the movie but “at the end of the day I just felt with two-and-a-half years in, in the presentation of this film, it didn’t quite fit in.”

I wanted Carol to stick around. It was cool to have a new main character, and it showed that they were differing from TOS a bit (especially as there was no indication of a relationship developing with Kirk.)

Hopefully Boutella will be good. She was great in Kingsman.

I hope there's at least some passing reference to Carol Marcus in dialog.

Maybe Jim and Carol were like ships passing in the night... it just wasn't meant to be.

I never got the sense from STID that Kirk was all that into her, shoot, Bones was the one who was really flirting with her.

I'm saying that for years. but still, people somehow expected a Carol/Kirk pairing in STB when it was obvious to me that Bones was the one interested in her, not Kirk

In ST:ID, I got the sense that Kirk and Carol could have something meaningful built on true friendship, instead of just some fling.

Oh well, I guess we'll never know.

And since this version of Carol is in Starfleet, she and Kirk may be able to raise David (if he should ever exist) together.

"You had your world, and I wanted him in mine" doesn't apply when the two worlds are the same. ;)

Detailed Simon Pegg interview with some interesting revelations:

Some high points: less Kirk/Spock focus, more Spock/Bones, more ensemble/family focus with the whole crew. Dubai represents "Starbase Yorktown" on the edge of the frontier, sort of a diplomatic meeting hub for new UFP members, and the story begins with the Enterprise docking there after 10 months in deep space. I like that -- finally, we get a world that represents the Federation but isn't Earth.

A starbase situated planet-side instead of in space.
To me, that really hearkens back to the original series.

I disagree about Carol. I don't watch Star Trek for the romance, and if she was in it, it would seem they'd have to go there. The Uhura/Spock romance is bad enough.

I do agree with you it's nice to have a new main character, but it shouldn't be someone with blonde hair and blue eyes.

They should kill off one of the main characters IMO.

@Laserbeam (Because the quote system is fucking broke again)

The Yorktown has a permanent memorial already in place on the Starbase grounds, so she was lost with all hands sometime before the movie.

^ If you are using Firefox, quoting him will end up with an empty box because of the special characters in his holiday username. A different browser will probably work just fine.

So what does the Yorktown itself have to do with all this? Is that another ship we're going to see crash?

It's interesting that Pegg decided to go with using the Yorktown here, given that ship's history as sort of a background precursor to the Enterprise-A. Could be a bit of foreshadowing to a possible replacement for the Enterprise after it gets torn apart and crashes (obviously renamed Enterprise).

No. I was under the impression that the Yorktown was a starship that crashed or was (perhaps partially) destroyed that the colony was subsequently named after because of its heroic actions, and might still exist on the grounds somewhere in refurbished condition (that last part is just my speculation).

ETA: I'm basing my speculation that Starbase Yorktown might be named after a ship on the use of a starship-y type name for the starbase, the starship-y logo in the memorial wall picture, and the fact that this Federation has a history of naming/locating ground facilities after heroic sacrificial vessels and crewmembers; namely the Riverside Shipyards being located in Kirk's dad's hometown and having models of the Kelvin as salt-shakers and so forth.

More to the point I just thought the use of the name had a bit of symmetry between the alleged original name for the Enterprise-A seen at the end of STIV and the fact that the Enterprise in the Beyond trailer is mostly dead and might require an eventual replacement.
