Spoilers STAR TREK BEYOND

So... are they ignoring that particular line of story and character development from ST:ID?

Is this going to be like "Skyfall" was to "Casino Royale" and "Quantum of Solace?" I'm not saying that's a bad or good thing, just noticeably different.

I didn't have a problem with either the actress or the character, and it would seem a bit odd to ignore her outright since the end of the previous film made a point of mentioning that she planned to be around for a while. But I suppose it's not that important in the grand scheme of the franchise.

It might just be that story rewrites led to anything with Marcus getting cut. Depending on how things shake out it might have been that there wasn't much room for them to do anything with her beyond a brief scene in the first place. If you're going to include her it seems to me that you'd want to be able to devote a good chunk of screentime to her and Kirk to any follow up to STID. Between the bad guy, the main cast (which is probably the big one, considering how little screentime some of them have gotten in the movies so far), and Sofia Boutella's character, there doesn't seem to be a lot of room her unless she was in a role like Keenser.

yes that's what I'm thinking (also Trek VI to V maybe)

Major press and sci-fi sites are calling the trailer "terrible" and "awful", and that's before you get to the reader comments under the articles.

The same can be said about the reaction to countless other early trailers, many of them for movies that turned out great. So this really doesn't mean anything. (I seem to recall a lot of hostility to the first The Force Awakens trailer.)

If I was a betting man, I'd put my money on Beyond tanking badly. It probably won't do as badly as Nemesis, but it'll be lucky to get to $350m IMO, and if the budget is the best part of $200m, that will be bad news.

I'll take that bet.

If Beyond flops, I'll leave the board forever.

You in?

This film will be profitable but less profitable than the other two and that's cool because films that are a "hit at the box office" (blah, blah, blah) are typically ho-hum given that we live in an era of quick thrills cinema.

I like some of the stuff Lin has been saying in the article on the other thread actually. For the first time, I can envisage that there might be something there that I can engage with.

And yet, the film widely considered to be the best all-time is also that (adjusted) highest earning.

But, yeah, broad generalizations are pretty awesome.

As everyone is pointing out, this looks like classic TOS. So, in that spirit, this adventure will be completely disconnected from the previous one, will contradict it in a few instances, and the only characters to carry over will be the main cast (and Keenser). :vulcan:

PS: this is a joke, even though Vulcans don't get the complexities of humor.

So Timeline wise, Lin told Collider that "Beyond" takes place two and half years into the Five-year mission so we're looking at 2262/2263.

Given your fondness for broad generationalisations, I'll take your word for it.

There's no consensus as to the best film of all time, buddy.

What I always think when I hear the word 'buddy'.

I had a complete lack of positive or negative reaction to the trailer. There are a lot of action movies I haven't seen that I'll get around to at some point, I'll add this one to the pile.
