Spoilers STAR TREK BEYOND

The trailer blew me away. Looks like it's gonna be tremendous fun! Kirk riding his bike through an alien quarry was my biggest "OMG AWESOME" moment. Great callback to the first movie (along with Sabotage)

"The frontier pushes back!"

ESA/Soyuz Launch...beautiful!!!

They get to watch the new Star Wars movie, onboard!!!

Regarding the motorbike, I can see how it fits into NuTrek. In ST09 we saw Kirk in a hotrod and on a bike (a different bike; the bike in the trailer seems like an older type). And going on a five-year mission, crew are probably entitled to bring some personal items to keep them sane on the journey. Kirk brings along his bike, for sentimental reasons. Spock might bring along his Vulcan lyre.

I can imagine McCoy ribbing him about the bike - "What century are you from? It's a piece of junk!"
Then, when they are on the planet, Kirk recovers the bike from the wreckage. He turns up on it to rescue McCoy, and gives him that ironic look that is classic Kirk. "Need a ride?"

Very good theory.

To those who think Kirk needs to be riding a space bike:

No, and, by the way, it was established that Christopher Pike loved to ride horses in the very first pilot, the one written by Saint Gene, and those are even more old-fashioned than motorcycles. For those in the future who like vintage vehicles, the wheel still works fine. For those who need something with greater performance characteristics, like, say, the police, there are hover bikes, as established in STXI.

Don't you realise that in the future horses are obsolete? This is the main reason GEN is so awful!!!

Plus, can we assume the Trailer is linear in time? By that I mean, do we "see" it in the chronology they cut it in, or could it be out of time order? If that makes sense?

Few trailers are ever in linear time, and this one definitely isn't. Here's io9's trailer analysis. First off, the opening shots seem to be from later in the film -- probably after the crash, as the crew is trying to take off again in a new ship (shades of the Bounty). The shots of the swarm of ships trashing the Enterprise are clearly out of sequence, because we see a shot of the nacelle coming off, then a shot of the ship with both nacelles intact, then a shot of the stump of the nacelle strut. So even that single action montage has had the timing rearranged for effect. Also, toward the end of the trailer, some additional shots of the attack on the Enterprise are intercut with shots from the planet-bound portions of the movie.

Trailers are not about accurately representing the structure of the film, they're about hooking the viewer. Lots of trailers include scenes that aren't even in the final film, either because they were edited out after the trailer was made or because they were shot specifically for the trailer. (I wouldn't be surprised if the opening bits with Kirk and Scotty talking about the song were absent from the film itself, for either of those reasons. That sort of character aside that doesn't advance the plot is generally the kind of scene that's most likely to be thrown out in editing.)

i wonder if they will even reference Carol Marcus in this film? cause I know they couldn't get Alice Eve to reprise her role as Carol for "Star Trek Beyond" but I'm hoping if they make a Fourth Star Trek Movie, They will bring her back and her and Kirk can start a relationship and make it last.

Given that STID was criticized heavily for being too imitative of TWOK, maybe this film's makers preferred to avoid using Carol again.

I hope there's at least some passing reference to Carol Marcus in dialog.

Maybe Jim and Carol were like ships passing in the night... it just wasn't meant to be.

I have a feeling she won't ever be back.

Major press and sci-fi sites are calling the trailer "terrible" and "awful", and that's before you get to the reader comments under the articles. And most of the stuff on reddit is pretty bad as well.

If I was a betting man, I'd put my money on Beyond tanking badly. It probably won't do as badly as Nemesis, but it'll be lucky to get to $350m IMO, and if the budget is the best part of $200m, that will be bad news.

By the time the next couple of long trailers arrive and the 10 or so tv spots, nobody but us here will even remember this teaser existed.

Nothing has been decided about how STB will perform or how good or bad it will be.
