Your favourite individual fan production...

Just for fun to discuss what we've liked (or not) in terms of a specific production as opposed to an ongoing web series.

None of these efforts are perfect and we don't really expect them to be. And by perfect I mean in terms of being on exactly the same footing as the official studio based productions. So this is really a case of something we've liked best nonetheless.

I've seen all of Star Trek Continues as well as most of Phase II/New Voyages. I've seen Starship Exeter and episodes of Starship Farragut. I find myself intrigued with Prelude To Axanar and I'm curious to see the final film. I'm also looking forward to seeing Starship Farragut's forthcoming episode, "The Crossing."

Out of all of what I've seen the one that takes the prize for me is Star Trek Continues' second episode, "Lolani." Nothing else I've seen has come as close to recapturing the essence and feel of TOS. They made this work on so many levels. No, it's not perfect, but the differences between this and the original series that inspired it is really a matter of casting. My criticisms on this one are trivial and in all fairness I could level harsher criticisms at some of TOS' actual episodes.

Todd Haberkorn as Spock is almost there in this one even though I think he really arrived in STC's Ep. 3. Vic Mignogna's Shatner works. Lou Ferrigno as Zaminhon is excellent. If I had a real druther it would be to have seen Chuck Huber as McCoy at this point rather than Larry Nemecek, and with all due respect to Larry. But that still doesn't take away from the final result of the episode as a whole.

The story--while it could have been massaged a bit further--is the kind of approach TOS would likely have taken. This is Star Trek aspiring higher than the pew-pew of Star Wars and more run-of-the-mill fan efforts.

Anyone else?

I have quite a few one-shots that I like. I couldn't pick just ONE. But then, as I always say, I kind of like all of it. I even like most of the films people here think are terrible. But anyone keeping an index, as I do, would have to like almost all of it.

Lolani is my favorite of the Trek fanfilms because, despite its flaws, it actually tries to be about something, and not something easy and trite.

For me, Continues is hands down the best. Some episodes are better than others, but for casting, production, consistent delivery-as-promised, none can compare.

There are exceptions, of course, but overall Star Trek Continues is the one I can count on to give me the kind of Trek I like to watch.

Mine:

Starship Exeter: "The Tressaurian Intersection"
Star Trek: New Voyages: "World Enough and Time"
Star Trek: Continues: "Lolani"

I don’t tend to get very emotional when watching films, I can be quite reserved. However ‘Lolani’ struck a nerve. It is not just my favourite fan production of all time, but is my favourite Trek episode of all time. Don’t get me wrong I am a huge fan of official Trek, but in my view ‘Lolani’ is the best of them all.

Obviously I like "Continues" best, but I'm biased because I work on the series.

As far as one-off productions, I enjoyed ST"Of Gods and Men. Sure it's corny, but I was literally in tears at the end when Uhura sang "Charlie is my Darling". Also, I think it's the finest performance of Walter Koenig in all of Trek, although some may also dig his turn in ST NV/Ph2. Loenig and Gary Graham really made that episode. Too bad they couldn't get Robert Walker Jr and Gary Lockwood.

Continues is my favorite.
I'm still waiting for them to deliver some more of the naval adventure, Federation politics/intrigue and exploration stories, but they've got the living heart of Star Trek just right.

I also have a real soft spot for Project: Potemkin. I overlook a lot of flaws with them because I like what they're trying to do with the characters.

Mine:

Starship Exeter: "The Tressaurian Intersection"
Star Trek: New Voyages: "World Enough and Time"

Ditto.

Tressaurian is best written.

I think 'World...' was first fanfilm I saw. Sulu :luvlove:

Not a fan of 'Lolani', though admire what STC does. For all its many faults and cheese, I have to put OGAM as third ;). Mainly for cast and Alan Ruck.

I haven't really been able to get into fan productions for the most part but one that I really did enjoy was "Fairest of Them All" by the Continues cast. It was just a really well put together sequel to Mirror, Mirror and I thought it really captured the Star Trek spirit.

mine:

1. Starship Exeter, The Tressaurian Intersection
2. Star Trek Aurora, pilot episode
3. Star Trek New Voyages, To Serve All My Days
4. Star Trek Continues, Lolani

For my money, the two "Starship Exeter" episodes are my favorite fan films. I would love to see a 3rd one get made to end their series as a trilogy.

As much as I like New Voyages and Continues, there is something really cool about watching episodes that feature new crews. For me, those tend to fit in better with the original series.

Despite it's rough edges, Starship Exeter: The Tressaurian Intersection is still my favorite, and it'll take something damn well-written to unseat it any time soon. :)

The Star Trek Continues episode "Lolani" was a complete gut-punch.

When the ship carrying Lolani exploded just as Kirk was about to rescue her...
I actually jumped out of my seat and yelled "NOOOO!" I can't recall a Star Trek episode affecting me that way since "In the Pale Moonlight". Absolutely devastating and heartbreaking.

The dinner scene in "Lolani" was classic Trek, a wonderful nod to the Khan dinner scene in "Space Seed". Ferrigno just nailed his scenes.
