I love Ellison's original version of this story. Very powerful stuff.
But I kinda have to agree with Roddenberry on this one (someone who I very rarely actually agree with, I hasten to add). Had Ellison's CotEoF been a script for The Outer Limits it could have been shot as written and been the best episode of the series, but it isn't quite Star Trek. Not his fault: after all, it's my understanding that it was written before any episodes were actually filmed yet, so the fact that the characters feel a little off is quite understandable. And I think the way most everyone on Trek treated Ellison is pretty deplorable, but I think the episode as filmed works better for Trek the it did as first written.
But since I love the episode as written on its own merits, I will happily give this audio version a listen.
