The Facebook unfriend

One thing I don't get is how people notice when I untag myself. There were times when I had to untag myself from certain pictures when they may make me appear unprofessional, or don't want to be closely associated with someone (like someone I barely know me keeping tagging me).

I have my settings so I can never be tagged. Just do that and they can't tag you so it links to your FB.

Teacake, do I remember correctly that you're not in the US? 'Cause I don't think we can do that here. :(

I'm in australia but I had no idea there were settings that differed in different countries. I will look for where you do it later. I also have it so that if anyone names me in their timeline by fb link it doesn't post to my timeline without asking my permission first.

I don't know if it's different in different countries, but I can't find that setting. There are options that require you to review a friend's post if they try and tag you in it before it actually does so.

Apparently the settings options do differ. Like RoJoHen, I can control whether a post or photo in which I'm tagged goes on my Timeline. I think I can delete a tag, too (never tried it). But I can't prevent someone from tagging me in the first place. Looking forward to seeing where you do that.

So is Facebook, as a concept, better as a means of communication and dissemination of information freely available for public use, or was it better as something limited to the elitist purview of the ivory tower? :vulcan:

It was just different. It barely had any features back in the day. You could write on people's walls, and you could poke them, but you couldn't post pictures or videos or links or anything fancy. It was, however, a really good way for those of us in college to keep in touch with our high school friends (at the time, most of us were still using AIM for that).

Ten years later, and I still use Facebook every day. It's a great way to keep in touch with people and share information. I get most of my daily news from Facebook. But it's also gotten clogged up with a lot of really annoying, stupid shit.

How do you guys deal with if you have a relative who has a lot of really conservative Facebook friends? Like, I don't want to unfriend my Aunt or my brother's fiance but I also don't want to be shared every single fucking hateful transphobic meme about Caitlin Jenner. Does Facebook have some kind of topic filter I'm not aware of?

I personally use such opportunities for personal amusement. For example, create and share a facebook page that will cause them to self destruct like a TOS era computer:

-Ex-Cons for Lower Taxes
-Paedophiles for The Environment
-KKK for Gun Control

...and the very least the comments are amusing.

You could write on people's walls, and you could poke them...
What am I actually supposed to do when someone pokes me? I never figured that out. Poke them back? What kind of sense does this make? If someone wants something from me, they shall write a message.

Honestly, until recently, I never realized that the poking option still existed. I thought they got rid of it years ago.

But yeah...poke them back. That's about it.

The 'poke' has never been defined. It can mean whatever you want it to mean - anything from 'I'm thinking of you' to 'Did you get that message I sent a week ago?'

Thanks! I still refuse to do anything just because everyone else is doing it ;) Seriously, if people can’t even be bothered to write a short „Hi, how are you, haven’t seen you in a while“ (and who’s fault is that? FB which filters entries so you only see half of the stuff people post).
And there is a reading notification for messages so you know that they read it, even if they didn’t have time to reply right away.

Of course, nothing beats the people I have never ever spoken to or seen in my life sending random friends requests.

If you poke people back, you're actually agreeing to a social contract that requires you to do... things for them.

Not a lot of people know that.

wasn't there a way to block "Friends of friends" posts? it's in the security section. Or maybe that keeps them from posting on yours but yeah I recall manually hiding posts that offend me. It gets time consuming! I also hate being forced to see, "NAME is now friends with THIS PERSON" With a big banner. WHO GIVES A RAT'S ASS?!
