The Facebook unfriend

How do you guys deal with if you have a relative who has a lot of really conservative Facebook friends? Like, I don't want to unfriend my Aunt or my brother's fiance but I also don't want to be shared every single fucking hateful transphobic meme about Caitlin Jenner. Does Facebook have some kind of topic filter I'm not aware of?

You can unfollow someone without unfriending them.

But what if I want to see all the cute pictures of their children, but I don't want to see the garbage their ultraconservative friends post?

Then you're SOL :p

I've had to unfollow Bruce Campbell, Orphan Black, the Three Stooges, etc. because I couldn't keep up with unfollowing all the comments by others on my homepage.

Facebook can be pretty useless sometimes.

I had a Firefox add-on called FB Purity which had some options, but it stopped working with FFx42.

I wish you can customize Facebook better. It's nice, but it can be so limited sometimes. I have started joining various groups and I hate getting notifications on each post that I participate in, but I would love to get notifications if someone replied directly to me or liked my posts. I like the Idea of groups, but I would love to see it utilized better. It's the same thing in your case. I don't want to unfollow people, but it's either that or unfriend them. Wish there was a middle ground.

These videos are instructive as what facebook is really doing and why you don't see what you want.

Usually if someone shares a picture from a random page you can Hide all content from that page. look for a "V" beside So and so, shared Bad content's picture. Select Hide all posts from Bad content and problem solved.

THIS. The arrow for opening the window is in the upper right corner of the post. You can hide all content from that page, or all content from that friend of your aunt. You should never see any entry of that friend again.

It also works if someone just likes something. I am not interested in all the things my friends like, only the things they post themselves. So I hide all the other pages.

Went to see the Scottish comedian Kevin Bridges a few weeks back and he does a routine about Internet bullying and how when he was bullied at school, he would have loved to have solved the problem by simply... deleting your fucking profile.

I unfriended my sister-in-law. She's into this multi level marketing beauty product thing and she kept clogging up my feed with her garbage. One time she called me out in a post for some sort of recruting bullshit, and I had no qualms about hitting the 'unfriend' button.
Do what you have to do man, it's your life, you don't need to be bombarded by other people's crap.

What I want most of all from Facebook is the ability to block politics talk, and sports talk. Alas, I am left with unfollowing people and blocking posts from the stupid groups/profiles they share.

I've defriended an old coworker (I liked), few months after I lost my old job. This was after several one sided text conversations, and long gaps in between and being unable to see her posts on facebook. I checked and I was still "following" her. No regrets.

May be easier when time comes for me to leave this area for a new job.

I've been defriended. Most of the time, I don't care. And there was a couple of occasions where I noticed number of friends being lower than few days before. I scanned my friends list and couldn't figure who it was. Must have been nobody important to me

You could avoid this by simply not going to Facebook. But now there's a lot of places that exclusively use Facebook logins or do most of their actual communication on Facebook. Giving up Facebook now means cutting yourself off from a llot of desirable content.

It would be nice to just be able to totally block political content. Even people on my side can be obnoxious the way they express themselves. People have started invoking the veterans to win every argument. "If you support immigration you hate veterans!"

It's not even my future sister in law who posts the obnoxious crap. She comments on the crap of her extended family.

Have you tried the hiding of all the extended family members? Whenever she comments, likes, or reposts something - hit the hide button. Soon your timeline will be clear.

I unfriend people all the time. Sometimes I block them completely.

It's just Facebook. If people get offended, they're taking it too seriously.

Fortunately most of these folks don't (or most likely can't) make this garbage up themselves, so just block the originators one at a time. Eventually all you'll get from your aunt are kid pictures, cookie recipes, and other aunt stuff.

You also have the option of citing sites like Snopes when the BS gets too deep.

Here's something I posted when that "Jade Helm" nonsense was going on:

“Here the big battles were being fought-against revised versions of the Bible, fluoridation, dirty books on school library shelves. The people of Garden Grove cared enough about the future of their country to pass an ordinance prohibiting the sale of UNICEF Christmas cards. At PTA and school board meetings in a dozen communities, women had the courage to stand up and reveal how Democrats were building barbed-wire stockades in Alaska to imprison all conservatives.” The Last Days of the Late Great State of California-Curt Gentry-1968

plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose”- Jean-Baptiste Alphonse Karr

I wish Facebook would feature an "enemies list". Then it could suggest friends from the enemies of your enemies.

I have some family and friends that I just don't follow their posts. I get so sick and tired of their political posts! I'm still Facebook friends with them, I just don't follow them. Problem solved!
