Spoilers Supergirl - Season 1

May as well reuse that stuff I suppose. It's just that I don't think I've seen a show do that in a while. Does The Flash do it with the running shots?

Maybe some of the overhead shots of lightning racing along the streets. And I'm sure they reuse some digital models and animations. The shot of the CGI Flash dangling in King Shark's grip reminded me of the shot of the CGI flash dangling in Grodd's grip.

I swear, if I hear "cousin" one more time, I'm going to shove a Twinkie in my ear.

ETA: Oh and was "Millennial Falcon" supposed to be a Harrison Ford joke?

Oh yeah and they used stock footage for Supergirl flying. ...I think.

I'm not sure if it was a reuse. What bugged me most, was that it didn't feel necessary. It stood out for some reason, drawing your attention. It was so brief, the flash flight into a zoom in close up ( not sure what to label it as), that they simply could have nixed it in favor of the next shot of her flying into the Maxell Lord facility.

Henshaw is definitely a Cyborg and not Martian Manhunter; they even put sound effects in the episode in order to clue people in to that fact.

I really did not notice it. But that comment reminds me of the odd editing choices on Superman IV. Its well known that its budget was drastically cut while in production. So the movie is filled the same repetitive shot of Superman flying toward camera over and over again.

But it was completely unnecessary to do that. There are a number of times when those shots could have been cut out. The moments before and after where enough to tell you he got from point A to point B. Leaving them it just highlighted the small budget and slowed down the pace.

Well, this was probably the best episode so far. The Cat Grant parts were still intolerable, but the stuff around it was good, and included some good growth for Kara. The fights really are good in the show, I didn't expect we'd get this much when the show was announced. I think Maxwell Lord could be a bit less of an obvious a-hole, especially since if he turns out similar to the comic character, it won't be very surprising when it happens with how he's been acting so far. I'm glad Henshaw seemed to lighten up a little bit when it came to Kara, although it could be part of an evil plan or something, since he obviously has some kind of big secret.

Loved hearing "Girls Just Want To have Fun" and I hope to see more of Kara's personal life explored.

I noticed the (possible) reuse too, but I think it's a great shot.

I swear, if I hear "cousin" one more time, I'm going to shove a Twinkie in my ear.

Pics! I think you can go ahead and get that Twinkie ready.

Anyone else getting a Tom Cruise vibe from the way the actor is portraying Maxwell Lord?

I did.

you've clearly never seen Elon Musk give an interview. Elon, while a great guy, is not very loquacious.

Agreed, but what's wrong here is that it seems so forced, like the writers think that this is a *mandatory* plotline for a female superhero.

I don't see anything gendered about it. As TREK_GOD_1 said, romantic soap opera is central to Spider-Man comics. The Flash has devoted itself regularly to Barry Allen's love life. Smallville's Clark Kent spent years pining after Lana Lang. Plenty of male-led shows have a romantic focus. It's no more pronounced here than it is on them..

Gotta pile on here. How much time did THE FLASH devote to the Barry-Iris-Eddie-Linda quadrangle in its first season? And this season alone, we're getting a couple of Barry-Patty scenes every episode.

SUPERGIRL's love triangle subplot seems positively low-key by comparison.

And this is nothing new. Superheroes have had romantic travails since at least The Scarlet Pimpernel:

"Oh, Percy, if only you could be more dashing . . . like the Scarlet Pimpernel!"

"Oh, Marguerite, if only I could tell you how I truly feel!"

I enjoyed this episode a lot. Watching this series gives me a goofy grin the whole way through.

Same here. I can definitely see how the show might strike some people as too light and cheesy and rom-commy at times... but I'm still enjoying the hell out of it regardless. The actors and relationships and dialogue are all a lot of fun and it's just a really enjoyable show to watch (I especially loved Kara's "I'm gonna melt your face" line at the end). :D

That said though, I do think the villains could stand to be a bit more threatening. So far they've all felt pretty generic and cartoonish, or like villains from the old '80s Superboy show-- just a step or two removed from the likes of Nuclear Man.

I thought it was stalker-ish to see Kara eavesdropping on the conversation between James and Lucy. That's personal stuff!

There was a thirst to prove herself when she initially confronted Reactron and got battered pretty badly. If James hadn't summoned the Man of Steel himself, she would be in a much worse shape.

Yeah the eavesdropping might have crossed the line a bit, but I wouldn't really call it stalking. And it's not nearly at the level of what we saw Superman do in SR.

Odd to see Maxwell Lord interpreted as a brilliant scientist-inventor. In the comics, he's just a ruthless businessman and has mind control powers.
I'm wondering if they're going to be using Lord basically as their version of Lex Luthor. I was already kind of starting to get that impression a bit here.

First couple of episodes were good, this episode it turned into a freaking rom-com. It looks like whomever wrote this one has a hand in the next one, too, but I hope they'll have been removed from the writing staff beyond that. Supergirl doesn't need to be so, OMG, what do I do about my lovelife,

Eh. What's wrong with her exploring her love life? Take a look at the entire history of Spider-Man, where about half of his appeal & drama stemmed from his romances. What's wrong with that here?
It wasn't that bad. You need to have some kind of character stuff outside of all of the superheroics, and this kind of relationship stuff is a good way to give us that. So far I've liked most of the characters, so I've been the more personal stuff.
Can we get some writers from Gotham up in here, please?
No, no and......no.
I like Gotham, but even I would not want any of the writers from that show anywhere near Supergirl, they're just way to different kinds of shows for what sort of works on Gotham to work on Supergirl.

I don't really it has anything to do with her being female, most of the movies and shows about male superheroes have done the same kinds of stories a thousand times over the years.
USS Triumphant said:
Well, okay, not necessarily them... but *someone* who knows how to write female characters. Which the Gotham writers seem to do well.
I don't know if I'd say they write female characters particularly well. Most of the women on the show have been totally nuts, and the couple we have gotten aren't really aren't much more than just a love interest for the men.

Well I'm officially worried now after the ratings declined again. It's still holding steady in viewers but it's obviously the demo that matters most, and that doesn't seem like it's nearly as high as it should be for a show this expensive. And I suspect it still hasn't even fully settled yet.

Although to be fair, it was probably unrealistic to expect Supergirl to do hugely better than all the other superhero shows on TV right now, regardless of what network it's on. There's only a certain audience for that kind of thing, and unfortunately it's not a really big one.

Because comic books are so niche these days...
