Once Upon A Time Season 5 Discussion Thread -Spoilers

I enjoyed Rumpelstiltskin's reaction at the end of the last episode. I thought it was going to be a boring story arc but it seems there is still hope.

Looks like he's going to bring a bit of that Rumpy arrogance to being a hero. :rommie:

Starting to get flashback fatigue with this show. Haven't felt this way since I was watching Highlander.

So... who is the Hero that is gonna save them, Nemoway?

Tried spelling it backwards, because that is what it sounded like... That didn't help much.

It's spelled Nimue.
A character from the Arthurian legend. She's also the Lady of the Lake who gives Arthur Excalibur (aka the "moistened bint" of Monty Python fame ;) )

The name is from Le Morte d'Arthur. Whilst she is a 'Lady in the Lake', she's not the one who has Excalibur. That latter one dies.

A lot of writers seem to mash her together with another version of the 'Lady in the Lake' who was Merlin's lover that imprisoned him for eternity. EDIT: Quick look at Wikipedia has the jealous student Lady as 'Viviane'.

I'm actually glad they're doing mostly just one Camelot arc with the flashbacks instead of trying to squeeze even more stuff into the characters histories. I don't mind when we get backstory flashbacks for new characters like the Camelot residents and Merida, but the last couple seasons they did seem to be stretching to come up with some of their flashback stories for the main characters.
I was looking around on the Disney wiki the other day, and ended up on some of the pages for Tangle and it got me thinking that it's kind of a shame they did a one off, totally different Rapunzel. I would have loved to see them do a more direct take on that movie like they did for Frozen and seem to be doing for Brave.

"Nimue" was an excellent origin piece for Merlin, Excalibur, the dagger and the Dark One. They've woven together a pretty good story from pre-existing mythologies.

Agreed.

Still wonder who put that sword BACK into the stone.

Was it Merlin... or Arthur as a way to keep it from the Dark Swan.

Glad to see Zelena is still a "word that rhymes with witch". :guffaw:

"Sir Castic"

That was a very good story, with other ingredients from the Arthurian mythos blended in.

I wasn't expecting Nimue to be the Dark One, especially since she was seemingly killed by Vortigan. But given her thirst for vengeance and power, it made sense. So Nimue processed the ember that could forge the dagger and Excalibur into one. But it surprised me that Arthur had control over Merlin even when he didn't have the whole sword. It was almost pointless to have to reunite the sword and dagger if he had Merlin on his side.

I enjoyed the stuff with the Fury and the underworld. I've been hoping for a while now that we'd get Hercules, and this makes me wonder if that might actually happen. I could see this being a small introduction to some ideas from Greek mythology before they jump full into later. We did get hints of Neverland with the introduction of Hook, and I'm pretty sure we saw a door to Oz in the Hatter's hat before they went there.

Considering that Poseidon was Ursula's father, the appearance of the Fury, the mention of gods and Prometheus's flame appearing in "Nimue", and last but not least the appearance of the Golden Fleece in Season 1 and Medusa in Season 3, I'm certain that the second half of Season 5 will be focused on Greek Mythology. Also, since Season Five's Wikipedia page states that Peter Pan, Cora, and the Blind Witch all appear in the 100th episode "Souls of the Departed", I'm certain that Hades is the main villain of the second half of season 5 and is the most likely candidate for who the "Distinguished Gentleman" is. I would also venture to say that Zeus is almost certainly Lily's father considering he's a shape shifter and quite the lady's man in mythology.

I don't remember seeing this, but Greg German has been cast as "The Distinguished Gentleman" who even TV Guide seem is pretty sure if Hades. A little dissapointed they didn't get James Woods, but German should still be a good Hades..... if that is who he is.

I really enjoyed last night's episode.
I was kind of already suspicious that The First Dark One was going to be Merlin's love before the episode, but the way it played out still surprised me. I was starting to suspect it actually going to be Vortigan pretty much right up until they revealed it was Nimue.
In the OUAT version of the story the Holy Grail is from "the gods" rather than the Christian God. That was a fun little twist on the usual story. I wonder if we'll learn anything more about it, or if that'll be it?
I've been waiting for Zelena to betray them eventually. There was no way she was not going to betray them at some point.
I wasn't real sure in the end, was Zelena already working with Arthur or did she just decide to help him right there?
I really enjoyed the whole backstory for Merlin. I wonder if we'll get to see anything from before he got his immortality, like who he was on the run from in the beginning?
I wonder what will become of The Dark One power at the end of the arc? I'm starting to wonder if this actually will be the end of the Dark One.

Next week is the big Merida 2 parter, which also see's the return of Mulan and Red. The fact that we're getting a big Merida/Mulan team up and the reveal earlier before the season started that Mulan will get a new love interest, makes me wonder if Merida is the new love interest. I could see them saying that the reason Merida wouldn't marry any of the guys from the other clans is because she isn't interested in men, but I have kind of mixed feelings on that. I wouldn't have a problem with them bringing in a new gay character on the show, but making Merida being gay the reason she wouldn't marry does seem to me to kind of go against the intention behind her story in the movie.

Interesting point about Merida, but since I actually haven't seen the BRAVE movie, I can't speak to her choices/intentions. :vulcan:

I am wondering, however, if we should even consider Merida as the object of Mulan's interest.

Afterall... isn't this veteran OUaT character returning to the show with another OUaT veteran. :p

Maybe it isn't Mulan and Merida you should be thinking about. :klingon:

Maybe its Mulan and Red. :mallory:

Probably. Then Rumple will have to find power and magic elsewhere. Maybe he'll find the power of "love".

Why did Merlin's friend go up in a puff of smoke but not Merlin?

Because he was humble, he was polite.

Think about the 3 clues Indiana Jones needed to survive the booby traps in "The Last Crusade."

Now, he who finds the Grail must face 3 challenges. First, is the path of God: Only the penitent man shall pass. Second, is the word of God: Only in the footsteps of God, shall he proceed. Last is the breath of God: Only in a leap from the lion's head shall he prove his worth
Merlin was humble. He was polite. He asked before he grabbed for the cup.

Merida's actress, Amy Manson, flat-out stated that there's nothing more than platonic friendship between her character and Mulan, who've crossed paths before in the back-history of the series' mythology.

I'm surprised I missed that. I guess that just leaves Ruby or a new character for Mulan's love interest.

Yeah, IGN did an interview with Kitsis and Horowitz and they did confirm that the Promethean Spark was setting more Greek mythology stuff later. So is this the first we're hearing about Her and Meg? I don't remember seeing any announcements about them being cast.
Tonight is the big two hour special episode. Really looking forward to it. The first hour is going to reveal why Emma turned to the Dark Side, and the second hour is the big Mulan/Ruby/Merida team up, with Merida's backstory flashbacks.

Edit: Both hours were really good. I'm a huge Emma/Hook shipper so I loved that the first hour focused on their relationship. I did not see the big Dark Hook coming. It should be very interesting to see what they do with him now.
The second hour was good too. I had been assuming pretty much since Merida started talking about the man who killed her father that it was going to be Arthur, so that did not surprise me.
Was that our first battle like that we've gotten on OUAT? I don't remember getting any actual army vs army battles like that.
Did they say anything here or early about why Mulan was no longer with Robin and his men? I thought that was the last place we saw her.
I'm hoping we get more Red and Mulan. Now that I think back we didn't get any hints about Mulan's new love interest, so I guess that means we must.
I liked Merida's story a lot too. We also did get to see Angus in a couple scenes, and he was one big horse.
Hmm, we got Sven in the Frozen story, and now Angus here, so I wonder if we'll get Pegasus in the Hercules story. We are getting Megara so they are probably following the movie rather than the traditional stories, and Pegasus was just as big a part of it as Sven and Angus in their owners' movies.
